Autumn at Wawayanda
Details
Into the woods we go seeking vestiges of Autumn, alongside Wawayanda lake with lots of history!
Check it out: http://www.njskylands.com/pkwawayanda for a little history of the park.
Wawayanda by one source is phonetically the Lenape Indian term for "water on the mountain" and another explanation is from the Munsee Indians who defined it as "winding, winding water".
We will walk by Wawayanda Lake to the Historical Furnace, Double Pond to Laurel and the scenic bridge then back and up Wingdam to the Waterfall(upper dam) and back. I revised this hike to eliminate a steeper climb.
This will be about a 2-3 hour fairly easy hike, covering approx. 4 miles on woods trails, with crushed gravel with one or two moderate ups and downs to two of the most scenic spots in the park. We will be moving at a slow/moderate pace stopping at several spots along the way.
Hiking boots are recommended , hiking poles may come in handy for the ups and downs, sun protection, bug spray and protein snacks are recommended. WATER is MANDATORY. Water with Electrolytes during the warmer mos. will help prevent dehydration.
PARKING IS FREE
Optional dinner at Sams B & G, Mahwah B & G, etc depending upon interest and availability.
As with all of our events you are responsible for your own safety . Hiking can be dangerous and injuries can occur, sometimes fatal. Trail blazes can sometimes be missing so there is always the possibility of getting off trail and possibly lost. Knowing this you agree to hike at your own risk and we cannot be held responsible for any injuries you or your guests may incur. Time is an estimate and can vary a bit depending upon the group and conditions.
