Join us for Super Scene, a 6-week dive into the fast-paced, story-driven improv format where directors compete to tell the ultimate tale. You'll build skills in genre, narrative, and playful collaboration—all leading to a thrilling final showcase.
WHERE:
Classes will take place at the Ooley Theater - 2007 28th St, Sacramento, CA 95818
WHEN:
Tuesdays, 7 - 9:30 PM: June 24th, July 1st, 8th, 22nd, 29th, August 5th (no class on July 15th), with a class showcase on Saturday, August 9th at 9 PM at the Geery Theater (2130 L St, Sacramento).
ABOUT:
Super Scene is a playful gateway format into the world of narrative longform improv. In a Super Scene show, five directors are each in charge of directing their own separate multi-scene storylines, giving guidance and grief to the improvisers bringing the story to life. Vying for the audience's favor, directors and storylines will be progressively eliminated throughout the show, until only a single director remains to complete their storyline with a final Super Scene. This is a wonderful opportunity for improvisers to practice genre and story variety, directing skills, and extended narrative that keeps audiences excited!
PREREQUISITES:
This class is recommended for experienced improvisers and/or advanced level improv students. Students should feel fluent with improv fundamentals and stage presence/conventions. For questions, please reach out to andy@windhausimprov.com.
In this class, students will learn to...
- Perform the Super Scene format, including a final show after the course has concluded.
- Direct other improvisers towards successful scene work and story creation.
- Create multi-scene improvised plot lines that are tightly focused on protagonist needs and desires.
- Play within multiple genres and story structures.
- Create a diversity of tone and energy within a single performance.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Andy Sarouhan has been a professional improviser and improv instructor for 25 years. His improvisation journey began in 1992 when he joined his high school improvisation team. That event started a chain reaction that eventually resulted in a BA in Theatre from UC San Diego and an MFA in Creative Writing from UC Riverside. From 2003-2019, Andy performed, directed, and coached extensively in San Francisco through BATS Improv, ImprovWorks, and Un-Scripted Theater Company.
In 2019, he relocated to Sacramento and has been active in the local improvisation scene as an instructor at B Street Theatre and a performer and producer at STAB! Comedy Theater and Windhaus Improv.
For 15 years, Andy has taken the practices and philosophies of improvisation to settings outside the theatre, facilitating skill-building workshops and corporate role-playing experiences for countless professional entities, ranging from public school districts to Fortune 500, and pretty much everything in-between. The dude just likes his work!
