What we’re about
The San Antonio Nature Hounds is San Antonio’s finest recreational group dedicated to providing a great outdoor experience for both people and dogs. Although, we have, and always will be primarily a group dedicated to activities related to dogs, dog walking, and dog-friendly locations, having a dog is not required to join our group. Living in the beautiful City of San Antonio, and in the Texas Hill Country area, we have a unique opportunity to explore the Great Outdoors with our canine friends, and we take full advantage of this fact. Because we are a large group with dedicated Organizers, we are proud to be able to provide a large number of walking events and other events throughout the City of San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country, daily, often in the mornings and evenings throughout the year. Our ability to provide numerous events to our large membership is one of the keys to our success as a group, and allows our busy but active members to join us frequently throughout each month.
Our events are not exclusively dog walking events. We also enjoy other activities such as camping, kayaking, dog training, rally training, social events, and benefit events which may or may not always be dog-friendly events. Our events usually take place in local City Parks and Greenbelts during the week. Our marquee event each week is our Wednesday Night Walk which is conducted on various places on the now expanded River Walk. We also frequent many of San Antonio’s other major City Parks throughout the week and on the weekends including Brackenridge Park, Hardberger Park, McAllister Park, Eisenhower Park, and OP Schnabel Park, as well as many of the other lesser known City Parks. Additionally, many of our weekday walks, particularly in the summer, are along the newly finished Salado Creek, Medina River and Leon Creek Greenbelts.
Perhaps the most exciting events of the Nature Hounds are our weekend trips to various State Parks. We go to many of Texas’s most spectacular State Parks including Enchanted Rock, Lost Maples, Gardner State Park, Bastrop State Park, Guadalupe River State Park, Pedernales Falls State Park, McKinney Falls State Park, Hill Country State Natural Area, and our local Government Canyon State Park as well as others.
We cater to all walking skill levels, to all ages, and to all breeds of dogs. With over 6,000 members, and close to 200 events each year, we are sure that we have something for you! If you are looking to improve your health, or improve the health and socialization of your dog, or make some new friends, or perhaps all of the above, come join us, we know you’ll have a great time!
