A Business Value Focused Model for Story Identification & Prioritisation
Details
Shane Hastie has kindly agreed to give this talk that he gave at Agile 2009 (maybe cut down slightly)
This tutorial teaches how to use a simple 5 component model to identify
and prioritise stories on a project. The five elements to the model are:
Business Objectives (value and goals) Business Actors (who does this)
Business Events (when does this happen) Business Process (what needs to
be done) Business Objects (what do we do it with - information and/or
tools) The tutorial introduces the model as a tool for understanding
current ("as is") and future state ("to be"), identifying the stories
for the future state and teaches the participants how to use it on a
mock project.
Process/Mechanics:
5 min introduction 15 min theory presentation - the model components 30
min exercise - build a model 10 min theory presentation - deriving
stories from the model 10 min exercise - write the stories 20 min
retrospective discussion
The exercise is based on a real-world project which used these
techniques.
Learning outcomes:
Understand how to use the five business viewpoints to focus on
delivering the maximum return on investment
Be able to analyse a business problem to break it down to the 5
components of the model
Be able to build a B5 model to understand the current business problem
Be able to modify the model for the future-state solution of the problem
Identify the prioritised stories using the model
