STOP yourself from capsizing in your kayak. Essential Skills Course

Details

Great for beginners!
Cost: $25 : Duration - 1 day

Learning how to stop yourself capsizing is a really fundamental skill that is good fun to learn (you will get wet) and relatively easy once it is understood.

You do not have to be an expert sea kayaker or paddler to learn these basic paddle strokes to stop you capsizing.
This is a new course to extend your skills, gain confidence and make your sea kayaking more fun as well as safer.

Arrive at our training site at Naru Beach on Lake Macquarie (a fabulously beautiful and safe venue) by 9:30 to change into your sea kayaking gear and be on the water by 10am.
10:00am to 12:00 noon.
The initial session will go through the principles of sea kayak stability and how to use your body and paddle to increase it.
You will learn the basic support strokes, including the sculling support, extended stern rudder (turn and support), the amazing sculling draw and its big brother, the hanging draw (perfect for surf or big waves) as well as the the high and low slap supports.
Lunch will probably be on Elizebeth Island, which has a great protected beach for relaxing and staying away from the crowds.

The next session 1 to 3 will be practicing and mastering 1 or 2 of these techniques (you personal choice) to ensure you can execute them and stop yourself from capsizing.
We finish up at 4 after reviewing our techniques and cleaning our gear, ready for departure.

And one huge benefit to learning these techniques is that they all make learning to Eskimo Roll so much easier. Another essential skill for the adventurous sea kayaker.

Come and have some fun. Learn new skills and become a safer, more competent, and more confident sea kayaker.

What to bring?
It will be a very wet day, so dress accordingly.
Footwear is mandatory (no exceptions) as there are rays in these waters and foot protection is needed.

Do you need equipment or transport?
Equipment is available for hire at $20 for the day.
