What we’re about
Seasoned Readers was formed in March 2011 as a place for adults 50 and older who are avid readers to engage in lively discussions about books of all genres. All club members are encouraged to propose books they would like to read and discuss. Because we believe in fostering an inclusive environment where all group member's opinions are valued; we ask that no politics, no religion and no solicitations be discussed during club meetings thereby giving club members freedom to share their opinions, insights and favorite moments from each book. Whether you loved the book or had reservations, your opinion is valued.
We choose books every 6 months from a list of recommendations by group members. Books can be from any genre but must be 400 pages or less. We try not to re-read books that some members have already read unless they agree that the book is worth discussing in our group setting. A list of prior books read will be given to each new member upon joining.
Meetings are held at the Panera Bread restaurant, 7635 West Bell, Suite 101, Peoria AZ on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Book discussions begin at 7 PM although members are encouraged and welcome to come at 6 PM to share a meal and to socialize for an hour.
While 3 co-leaders manage the group; Dana Richardson, Kath Mannel, and Pam Logan, we share group discussion leadership among all members. Each month a different group member leads the book discussion beginning with a short bio of the author and what they may have written prior to the book being discussed. Currently there is no cost to group members. However, if group membership grows to more than 10 (based on current Meet-up fee schedules) , each group member is asked to contribute $12 twice a year to cover the cost of Meetup membership. The $12 fee is due at the second meeting each member attends and at the 7-month anniversary of each group member. Costs may change dependent upon any changes in Meet-Up rules.
In addition to monthly meetings, we may also have occasional special events or activities related to reading. These may include author talks, book signings, or field trips to literary events in our community. Or, they may include volunteer activities such as reading to the elderly, children or the infirm. We welcome any group members’ recommendations regarding such activities.
