They're usually played privately among friends or by arranging with others to share the cost of purchasing the game.

On the other hand, while specialty stores do let you try some of their mystery games during their open gaming sessions, they often offer demos or those games that are more repeatable or contain multiple cases (you can bring your own single-case, one-time play game and play with others if you want, though). Additionally, RPG-like events, if they do play hybrid games, they do it in an adaptive manner, using RPG mechanics and the case as a framework.

Moreover, Detective for a Day is a relatively new company, and their products are not available in specialty board game stores, you have to buy them directly at their website.
