What we’re about
“Meditation practice begins by sitting down and assuming your seat cross-legged on the ground. You begin to feel that by simply being on the spot, your life can become workable and even wonderful.”
– Chögyam Trungpa, Founder of the Shambhala Tradition
Shambhala Meditation Center exists to help New Yorkers of all traditions discover their inherent gentleness, sanity, confidence, and humor.
Through awakening our inherent goodness and potential as human beings—as individuals and as social networks and communities—we can help to foster an awake and compassionate global human society.
We currently offer programs and community events for meditators of all ages and levels, both online and in-person. Come sit with us!

- Mindfulness and Embodiment: A special workshop with Erika BerlandBalance Arts Center, New York, NYUSD 65.00
You're invited to join us for a special workshop with Erika Berland, author of “Sitting: The Physical Art of Mediation!"
Is your body uncomfortable when you meditate? Do you experience tightness or holding in your neck, shoulders or back? Or perhaps you just want to explore the physical aspect of meditation more fully? This workshop offers practical instruction on how to release habitual patterns of tension and relax more fully into the meditation posture.
Through guided somatic practices, based on experiential anatomy and utilizing direct physical and anatomical imagery, we will increase our body awareness and discover a deeper sense of body-mind synchronization. With the emphasis on the creative aspect of working with both the Sitting posture as well as the traditional postures of Standing, Walking and Lying down, we can practice bringing our mindfulness practice into our daily lives.
