In Memory of Marian Matthaey - Art Gallery Walk in Chelsea and Tribeca

Art gallery walks were the signature of Shorewalkers Hike Leader Marian Matthaey. In her memory, join us for a gallery survey walk in Chelsea and Tribeca, visiting some of the galleries that Marian introduced us to, and a few new ones. Total distance is 8-9 miles, and there will be a lunch break (BYO).

*Because of changing exhibition schedules and summer hours, this walk will take place rain or shine.*

Meet: Saturday, June 28, 2025, 10:30 a.m. at the Eighth Avenue/West 33rd Street entrance to Moynihan Train Hall, outside if the weather is good, inside if it's not. Please use the restrooms in the train station before we begin.

Course: We'll walk at a moderate pace along the Moynihan Connector through Hudson Yards, and along the Hudson River Park Esplanade to Chelsea (2 miles). After visiting five Chelsea galleries, we'll return to the Esplanade and walk to Tribeca (2.5 miles) to visit three galleries there. Although nothing seems *that* far, the distance does add up.

What we'll see: The artwork will feature a variety of media including painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, bronze, cast glass, and photography. As Marian did, before we enter each gallery, we'll give a brief intro/orientation about the artists and their art. You will have 10 minutes to roam each gallery on your own, and then we'll move on to the next one.

Bring: Hat, sunglasses, rain gear (if predicted), water, snacks, and lunch (or purchase lunch in Penn Station or Moynihan Food Hall before we begin our walk). We'll have a snack/lunch break in Chelsea, but no food is available for purchase at our lunch spot.

Post-Walk Gathering: After the walk ends in Tribeca, please join us at Terroir Tribeca, 24 Harrison Street, for a refreshing beverage to remember and toast Marian, and to discuss what we’ve seen. We'll arrive there as Happy Hour begins at 4 p.m. (until 6).

Return/Early-Exit: Multiple drop-out points, and easy subway access along Hudson River Park. From Terrior in Tribeca the Chambers Street stations for 1/2/3 and A/C are four and five blocks south, and N/Q/R/W can be accessed at the Canal Street station (Broadway).

Due to capacity limitations within the galleries and high demand for this walk each time Marian hosted it, sign-up will be limited to Shorewalkers members only.
