Mamaroneck 2 New Rochelle: Waterfront, Woods, History, & More

Details
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION INCLUDING THE MODIFIED RSVP PROCESS
This walk was inspired by article in the WSJ highlighting a renaissance in downtown New Rochelle which just happens to be the hometown of your humble hike leader.
LEADER: Cameron Smith, camerons1006@gmail.com; 908-672-9250
CO-LEAD: Gina Miller, 347-842-5452
WALK DETAILS: This roughly 10 mile moderate to brisk paced walk will start promptly at 12:30 at Mamaroneck Train Station where most members will arrive via train from the city although some may also arrive via car and park for free at the train station. NOTE: There is no bathroom stop at the train station but will be one at the first stop a half mile away.
We will leave promptly at 12:30 after train arrives from GCT at 12:18 and walk about a 1/2 mile down Mamaroneck Avenue to Harbor Island Park. After a brief rest (and restroom stop), we will then hike inland from the waterfront about 1.5 miles to reach Leatherstocking Trail that connects Mamaroneck to New Rochelle for a 1.5 mile stretch in the woods to the trailend in New Rochelle where we will offer a dropout option to members who can walk another 1.5 miles to Larchmont Train Station. The majority of our shorewalkers will continue 1 mile to the historic Thomas Paine Cottage and nearby New Rochelle HS with a short bathroom stop nearby. We will then continue zigzagging another 2.5 miles to Five Islands Park with beautiful views of the sound and the emerging skyline of New Rochelle. After a brief rest (and restroom stop), we will hike about 3 miles from the park to downtown New Rochelle ending at the corner of Huguenot St and Memorial Highway where your leader will point out: the entrance to New Rochelle train station a block away, the historic Trinity St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and last but not least, the taproom for 18th Ward Brewery, an outpost for the Brooklyn-based brewery 18th Ward Brewery which is also just 2 blocks from the train station (they serve lite bites, allow outside food, and have very nice bathrooms).
HOW TO GET TO STARTING POINT:
Most Shorewalkers will take the 11:36 train from GCT arriving at Mamaroneck at 12:18 (One way fare is $9.75 Adult/$6.50 Sr). Drivers can park for free at the station parking lot (557 Mamaroneck Avenue).
RETURN HOME FROM NEW ROCHELLE:
All Shorewalkers taking train can catch any train from New Rochelle leaving at either :01 or :34 every hour (One way fare is $8.75 Adult/$5.75 Sr). Drivers will take train in other direction to return to Mamaroneck Station.
BRING: There is no lunch stop but we will take a brief break in Harbor Island Park and Five Islands Park so do bring light snack/drink along with hat, sunscreen, water and comfortable hiking footwear.
GUESTS:
If you plan to bring a guest, please forward them this guest waiver and make sure they sign it before coming to the walk: https://tinyurl.com/c2pyf2t5
MODIFIED RSVP PROCESS: In order to minimize the aggravation caused by casual clickers (those who change their mind at last minute so others can't take their spot), I will initially cap RSVPs at 40 and then only take additional motivated members (from the Waitlist) who text me (908-672-9250) that they really want to attend this event. Just to be clear, NO TEXT, NO GO, I will require everyone including the president (I mean He Who Must Not Be Named, not Pam) who wants to join us from the Waitlist to text me (908-672-9250). Preference will be given to regulars on previous hikes and/or members who indicate they are highly motivated members (will also join us to socialize at the 18th Ward Brewery taproom at end of our walk). Members who are paying attention here will realize that no-one should be left on the Waitlist other than casual clickers (folks who don't pay attention to directions).
Please do not post any comments/questions prior to the hike, instead contact Cameron (leader) at 908-672-9250 or camerons1006@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Take the Great Saunter Fall Challenge. Register here to walk 32 miles in 16 days starting October 4. Registration is only $10, and Shorewalkers will donate all fees to the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy, the dedicated caretakers of the park’s beautiful gardens and lawns. This walk will count for 10 miles of your total. You do not have to participate in the Fall Challenge to join the walk—all members are welcome.
