Mt. Rose Wilderness - Galena Falls Loop Hike

Details

Please Join us for a 9 AM morning hike in the Mt. Rose wilderness. We'll hike to the waterfall and return via Relay Peak road.

The hike is about 6.2 miles. We plan to take a 20 minute break by the waterfall. The total time for this hike will be approximately 3.5 to 4 hours roundtrip including the break. Elevation gain will be about 700 feet. This hike is considered Moderate to Moderately Strenuous.

For those who want to CAR POOL, we will meet at 8:15 AM in the parking area between the Starbucks and Shell gas station in the Galena Junction shopping center on the corner of Wedge Parkway and Mt. Rose Hwy.

Starting out on the Mt. Rose Summit Trail, we will immediately be rewarded with big views to the south of Tahoe Meadows and Lake Tahoe. The smooth trail continues into the open woods of pine trees and hemlock for a great hike to the panoramas of Mt. Rose and the waterfall itself. The Mt. Rose waterfall is formed by Galena Creek which cascades over a rocky slope. The water then spreads out to nourish wildflowers and other vegetation surrounding this part of the trail. We'll take the connector trail up through the lush meadow to meet up with Relay Peak road then back to the trailhead.

Hiking boots and poles are recommended - there may be some snow on the trail. Dress in layers as it will start off quite chilly. As always, bring water, snacks to keep yourself hydrated and energized. Well behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

Since this is a Sierra Club hike, we ask you to sign our liability waiver at the trailhead and donate $1 to help cover First Aid Training for all our leaders. If you want to review the Sierra Club Sign-Up and Participant Agreement in advance, see pages 3-4 at: https://bit.ly/3zN1Jl0

We do ask that if you decide to not come on the hike please use the meetup website and change your attendance to no.

Membership in the Sierra Club is NOT a requirement to participate in any of our hikes. If you are interested in joining, please ask us for the documents that you may take home and consider.
