What we’re about
Welcome to SLO Urban Sketchers! We're a group of keen observers and documenters of our dynamic urban environment. Why take a picture on your phone and then instantly forget about it when you can really see, feel, hear, and really experience a place - making memories that will last a lifetime?
Join us weekly (typically) on Sunday afternoons where we'll pick a location in or near downtown where we can sketch, paint, chat, share tips and tricks, etc in attempt to connect deeper with this place we call home and each other.
No sketching experience needed - only an open mind, a pen and a sketchbook. If you're brand new to the concept of Urban Sketching, check out the global community website here - https://urbansketchers.org/
Hope to see you at a session soon.
Upcoming events (2)
See all- Sunday Sketchin' - Farmhouse Corner MarketFarmhouse Corner Market, San Luis Obispo, CA
Let's get our Sketch on! Continuing on with our Sept 'wine month' theme, let's meet indoors this week where we'll be nice and comfortable in the posh setting of Farmhouse Market. A great food and beverage selection for those that are interested. No purchase required (ever) to attend an event.
Note: the earlier start time. The venue closes at 5 so this allows some extra time to linger after should we desire.
We'll meet inside. I'll get there early to secure the best seating.

Fine print: Typically, we get two sketches in per event. Plan for about 30-40 mins per session – this gives us the ability to draw the same space from different angles or pick up and walk to another nearby spot to keep things fresh and interesting. Before, between, and after sessions, we'll do a quick group introduction/share of what we created - in order to support and inspire each other while reinforcing the communal aspects of the group.
Things to consider before joining session:
- Skill level: All ages and abilities welcome. No sketching experience needed. This is a non-judgemental supportive environment that encourages you to express yourself however you want. If you have any mobility considerations please let me know so we can factor that into the route/destination.
- Supplies: Be sure to bring a sketchbook and something to draw with. I'll have some extra pens and watercolor kits if anyone wants to experiment or forgets something. A small shoulder bag is helpful so you're not carrying everything in your hands. (*Note that I recommend drawing in pen (mistakes are your friend!) and on a smaller sketchbook rather than a large pad given the short duration (small = fast)).
- Sitting: We typically sit wherever we can. On the ground, a bench (if available), on a wall. If you need it, bring something like a towel or blanket to sit on if concerned about dirt or comfort. (*Note we'll prioritize shady spots when we can depending on heat/sun).
- Weather: Bring a jacket as it cools off in the evening and or hat/sunscreen as we may be in direct sunlight for up to 45 mins at a time. If the weather gets real bad we can go indoors or reschedule.
- Questions & RSVP: Reach out so I can answer them. If you can't make it, be sure to update your reservation in advance so I have a good idea of final head count for planning purposes.
- Sketchbook Social & Networking @ Fieldwork StudioFieldwork, Atascadero, CA
Let's get together with our friends over the grade, Fieldwork. This week we'll do something a little different and rather than create new sketches, we'll celebrate all great work we've accomplished as a group over the last two+ years by throwing ourselves a 'Sketchbook Social' (a new term I'm coining). I encourage everyone who attends to bring a sketchbook (or more than one!) to put out on display for us all to peruse (don't worry, we'll be sure to handle gently and treat them with the respect they deserve).
In addition to inspiring each other, it'll be a fun afternoon of artistic socializing, networking, and perhaps, sneaking in a sketch or two.
New sketchbook raffle ticket and refreshments provided. Parking available on site and on street. Happy to help arrange carpooling for those that want/need a ride.
