Overview: On a few recent hikes, I've been asked to discuss hiking safety, so I'm scheduling a workshop to do just that. We will not be hiking during this workshop, but there will be small amounts of walking during demonstrations.

This workshop will be geared towards beginners and anyone looking to learn.

My approach to hiking safety uses critical thinking, observations, and science to form decisions on gear, tactics, and problem solving. Therefore, all topics will be approached with science in mind. For example, instead of saying "don't get sweaty late in the day, because you'll get hypothermia", we'll discuss the science behind our body's thermal management and how heat is lost to the environment.

Topics will include, but are not limited to:

- General safety philosophy
- The one (not ten) hiking essential
- Mitigation of risks from plants and animals
- Mitigation of risks from other humans
- Planning for safety
- Trailhead safety
- Planning for and responding to weather
- Basic direction finding
- First aid
- Signaling devices
- If lost, what should you do?
- Case studies: recent mountain rescues

Location: Exact location to be determined, but it will be in Long Beach, CA. Most likely in a park.

Starting point: Look for the Socal Sciences Hikes banner, and the guy with long hair, beard, and cowboy hat.
