Philosophy Debate: God VS Atheism
Details
Please join us this Sunday as we explore religion, God and whether they are required to live a good and moral life.
We will cover many philosophers and ideas including Girard, Jung, Plato, Kierkegaard, Nietszche, Singer, Abrahamic and Eastern spiritual traditions (& their theologians and mystics), Atheism and Agnostic thought, pantheism, and more (plus whatever relevant that you are familiar with).
We will meet at the CAPTAIN MELVILLE, 34 Franklin St in Melbourne CBD, at 2.00pm for 2.15pm start sharp.
There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background; all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared have your own assumptions challenged!
Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve merely as a springboard towards a deeper discussion in waters unknown...
Some points and questions to consider before the event:
Is God required for morality?
Is God required for transcendental categories (eg logic), is that important?
Do all religions point to goodness, or truth?
Can you be a moral atheist?
Without religion, can society survive?
What explains the drift from Christianity in the West, is it good?
Is Science a new religion and is it adequate?
Does a materialistic worldview allow for truth or goodness, and does this matter?
More specific discussion points will be pointed closer to the event. These are just general points as to start thinking.
This will be a discussion-debate - so bring your energy! Hopefully a fun session to start the year.
Hope to see you there!
Saz
