About us
Welcome to SocraticSessions!
SocraticSessions is a beginner‑friendly, guided discussion group for people who want to learn about the world through conversation. Each week, a moderator leads the group through current events using clear questions and an accessible lens — no prior expertise needed.
Welcoming & Structured – All perspectives are valued, and a facilitator keeps the discussion focused and easy to follow.
Learn by Talking (or Listening) – Designed for non‑experts who want to understand economics and psychology more deeply through guided dialogue, not lectures.
Wednesdays: Economics Lens – How incentives, markets, and policy shape everyday events.
Saturdays: Psychology Lens – How behavior, motivation, and group dynamics influence what happens in the world.
If you enjoy unpacking why things happen — not just what happened — you will feel right at home. You are welcome to share your perspective, ask questions, or simply listen and learn as the guided conversation unfolds.

Are You Awake, or an NPC?
Pablo Creek Regional Library, 13295 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32246, USA, Jacksonville, FL, USWe will be meeting at the Pablo Creek Library in The Conference Room
[Video Link: Are We More Conscious Than Others?]- Are any of us truly aware of our own lives?
- Can you tell who’s thinking for themselves just by watching them?
- If you see through the rat race but run it anyway, are you trapped, or free?
- Is the person who rejects it all any more awake than the one who goes along?
In video games, an “NPC” is a background character who isn’t controlled by a real player. They just repeat the same lines and routines. These days, people use the word to describe someone who seems to go through life on autopilot. But it’s not that simple. Someone who loves their 9-to-5 might know exactly what they’re choosing. And someone who questions everything might just be following a different script.
We’ll start with how we decide who’s really “awake,” then ask the bigger question: are any of us truly free to be ourselves? No background needed, watching the video not required, just bring your curiosity and your perspective.
