Savoy Automobile Museum features five exhibition galleries. Four are temporary rotating galleries and the fifth showcases the permanent Savoy Collection.
The exhibits for our time are:
- Cannonball Run - The Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Race is named for Erwin Baker, who logged an estimated 5.5 million miles and set 55 different cross-country records in the early days of automobiles. In 1933 Baker set a record mark of 53.5 hours to drive from New York to LA. A record that stood for 38 years. In 1971, to protest the new 55 MPH speed limit, Brock Yates and others revived the Cannonball Run, and Brock Yates and Dan Gurney broke Baker’s record with a time of 35 hours and 54 minutes. Here is an opportunity to view vehicles that have run the race and learn the stories of their experiences.
- Roar of Jaguar - Almost immediately following WWII Jaguar entered the field of motorsport racing with the XK120 which was the world’s fastest car when launched. Throughout the decades the company has continuously developed race cars that have been proven winners at Le Mans and other notable events. This exhibition will display a cross section of Jaguar race cars that traces the company’s pursuit of excellence on the track.
- It’s a Duesy - Fred and August Duesenberg began designing engines in the early 1900’s. In 1920, the brothers relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they founded the Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company. They produced the Duesenberg Model A and continued building winning race cars. The company was purchased by E.L. Cord in 1926 and in 1929 they began selling the Duesenberg Model J, which was powered by a 265 HP straight-eight engine. The body and cabin were built by custom-coach builders. They were considered among the most luxurious American cars ever made and were popular with movie stars, royalty and the wealthy.
- Shelby Built - Carroll Shelby was an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur best known for his involvement with AC Cobra and Mustang-based performance cars. He was the only individual to win 24 Hours of Le Mans as a driver, team manager, and manufacturer. He was known for creating high performance cars for both the street and track. He not only worked for Ford but also collaborated with other manufacturers. This exhibit highlights not only the most well-known vehicles, but also some of the lesser-known ones.
- The Savoy Collection - features twelve vehicles from Savoy’s special permanent collection.
This is an opportunity to photograph the individual beauty and design of the vehicles.
