Stoic Paradoxes by Cicero

Details

Dear friends,

The Stockholm Stoic MeetUp group invites you to a presentation on Cicero's book "Stoic Paradoxes" (lat. Paradoxa Stoicorum). In this book, Cicero analysed six basic stoic sayings which went against popular beliefs in Roman society at the time. To emphasize the contrarian aspect of these sayings, Cicero used the ancient greek term paradox — para (distinct from) and doxa (opinion), which in modern terms would probably be translated to "controversial opinion".

The presentation, which is expected to last between 20 to 30 minutes, will be followed by an open discussion on the six sayings. Focus will be put on the basic teachings of Stoicism and the genre of popular philosophy itself.

This is also an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals in the Stockholm Stoic Meetup group and reflect on how we can live a life guided by stoic philosophy.

None of the organizers themselves are philosophers by profession nor degree. We are just laymen who are very interested in stoic philosophy. So, do not feel discouraged if you are not used to philosophical discussions. Everyone is welcome and we always try to keep the discussion easy-going and practical.

Best regards,
Patryk Sapa
