Sunshine Adventure Hike 1/29: Safford Peak (Sombrero) 🥾☀️🔷

Let’s enjoy a challenging adventure hike on the northwest side by climbing Safford Peak (also known as Sombrero). We will be hiking the Sombrero via North Scenic Drive trail.

The trail is 3.6 miles out and back with 1500 feet of elevation, featuring a scramble near the top (with blue rectangles painted in the rocks to guide the way). The first part to the saddle is a nice warmup, then it gets a little steep with some sliding rocks, loops around and then has a fun scramble at the end. In the past, this hike has taken us approximately three hours.

We will be taking breaks along the way. As far as adventure hikes go, this one is a well-balanced moderate one - on the shorter side with a respectable climb and some technical challenge. This is Jon’s favorite hike in town (as featured in an upcoming Tucson Lifestyle online article 😁)

As for all of our adventure hikes, we will be staying together as much as possible, but if things get challenging, please go at your own pace. Please be prepared to turn around and head back safely if that is the case.

We will convene at the trailhead at 6:55 for introductions and begin our hike at 7:00am. Expect to return to the parking lot just after 10am.

There is no charge for parking at the trailhead, leave considerate of other hikers as we park.

Please bring water and sunscreen, hiking poles may be helpful for the rocky incline and decline, with some scrambling.

The weather forecast right now calls for 47 degrees at the start and 56 degrees by the time we finish, a tad chilly! I recommend layers. This hike is very exposed.

We will be taking pictures and posting them to our group Facebook page. Thank you for your consent to post by joining our hike 😎

Hope to see you out there!

Thanks,
