Bike & Hike - N. Shore Park to Weedon Island Preserve (28 miles r/t + 3 mi hike)
Details
Let's meet at the SE corner of the parking lot at North Shore Park in Downtown St. Pete shortly before 08:30 AM, so we can leave on time.
THE RIDE: We will pedal along St. Pete's waterfront and explore several neighborhoods such as Snell Isle, Shore Acres and Rivera Bay, just to name a few. Our destination will be Weedon Island Preserve. Total distance will be 28 miles at a pace of 10 - 12 mph. We will make stops during the ride to hydrate.
THE HIKE: At the Preserve we will walk a little less than 3 miles. Besides parts of the Upland Trail we will check out two boardwalks that extend through tidal flats and mangrove forests. Both trails include an observation pier, providing viewing opportunities over saltwater ponds, which are often teeming with mullet and wading birds. We will also be able to enjoy the view from a 45-foot observation tower. On a clear day, we should be able to see the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa.
Expect to spend about 1 1/2 hours at the Preserve. Our visit might include the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center.
After our hike we will head back a slightly different route.
Those who like could go for a late lunch afterwards. Doc Ford's at the Pier is always a good option. They have plenty of outdoor seating.
Please always remember that this will be social event and not a race. Don't schedule anything right after, as the ride might take longer than expected. This is in particular true for the Preserve. If you need to get back earlier, you will be on your own.
Make sure you check your bike before the ride. Please carry sufficient water and protect yourself from the sun. Our route will provide very little shade. Bug spray and a snack might also be a good idea. Bike locks will be essential.
