Sydney Bushwalks & Getaways

An approximately 10km walk (over 10,000 steps), at a brisk 5km/h, exploring the parks and foreshore around the CBD. This weeks walk will finish outside the main UTS (University Technology Sydney) campus at Broadway - Which is near Central Railway Station.

From Stand K we will walk down to Darling Harbour. We will then walk around Cockle Bay and continue walking along all the Pyrmont wharves until we reach the Anzac Bridge. We will then continue through the back streets of Pyrmont and Ultimo to get to the UTS campus at Broadway. We may even visit the fish markets.

Today we will be visiting the Woy Woy Hieroglyphs in the Brisbane Waters National Park on the Central Coast. The hieroglyphs were discovered in the 1970's and their origin is unknown. However it is doubtful that they were created by ship wrecked Egyptian Sailors about 4,500 years ago. They are in too good of condition to be of that antiquity.

We will meet on the western side (Brisbane Waters Drive side) of Point Clare Railway Station at 10:15 am. The 8:50 am Newcastle train from Central arrives at Point Clare Railway Station at 10:11 am. Because of the short platform at Point Clare Railway Station you need to travel in the last four carriages of the train. The walk is mostly on fire trails on a ridge in the Brisbane Waters National Park. The walk will finish at Woy Woy where we will have late lunch at the Bayview Hotel (probably after 2:00pm).

The walking Distance is about 10 km.

WHAT TO BRING:
Please wear good bushwalking shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen, rain jacket, first aid kit, and 2L water.

TUES 20th. Sorrento, Queenscliff, Bells Beach, Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Lorne, Wye River, Kennett River, Skenes Creek, Apollo Bay.
WED 21st. Mariners Lookout, Cape Otway NP, Lavers Hill, Otway Fly, Hopetoun Falls, Beech Forest, Beauchamp Falls, Apollo Bay.
THURS 22nd. Lavers Hill, Port Campbell NP, Princetown, 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge, Port Campbell.

BEACH BOXES. There are nearly 1000 beach boxes on the Mornington Peninsula at Mount Eliza, Mornington, Mount Martha, Dromana, Rosebud and Portsea. Mount Martha is the most famous of these with 252 beach boxes at Jullul Bay.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA. We won't have enough time to visit all of the tourist attractions, but we should have plenty of time for 30 minute to one hour stops and short walks every day. ARTHURS SEAT. Chairlift, Circuit Walk and Kings Falls. MOUNT MARTHA. Jullul Bay, Beach Boxes, The Briars & Wildlife Sanctuary, Balcombe Creek Boardwalk. MERRICKS. Point Leo Estate & Sculpture Park. DROMANA. Beach Boxes, Bass & Flinders Distillery, Dromana Bay Trail. FINGAL. Peninsula Hot Springs, Fingal Beach Walk.

COSTS. Unfortunately, all of the airfares and accommodation costs have gone up quite a lot over the last 12 months, which means that we have to increase our holiday prices to cover costs and to make sure that we don't lose money.

FLIGHTS. We are now booked on 7.00am flight with Jetstar which means that we have to get to the airport by 5.00am.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS. Mornington Peninsula coastal towns and beaches, Bell's Beach, Teddy's Lookout, Lorne, Kennet River Koala Walk, Mariners Lookout, Apollo Bay, Cape Otway NP, Otway Fly Treetop Adventures, Mait's Rest, Port Campbell NP, 12 Apostles, Helicopter Flights, London Bridge, Gibson's Steps, The Grotto, The Razorback, Island Arch Lookout, Mutton Bird Lookout, Port Campbell Lookout.

HOLIDAY ITINERARY. We will fly to Melbourne, pick up a 12 seater minibus and drive to Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula. We will stay 2 nights at Rosebud, then get car ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff, then drive to Bells Beach, Lorne and Apollo Bay. We will stay at Apollo Bay for 2 nights and drive to Cape Otway National Park to go for a bushwalk and to look for Koalas along the way. We will then drive to Port Campbell via the 12 Apostles and London Bridge. We will stay 2 nights at Port Campbell and then return to Melbourne via Colac and several tourist attractions along the way. This holiday will mainly involve short bushwalks, tourist attractions, sight-seeing and Koalas in the wild.

ACCOMMODATION. We have booked good quality motel rooms for 2 nights at Admiral Motor Inn, Rosebud, 2 nights at Seaview Motel, Apollo Bay and 2 nights at Port Campbell Motor Inn, Port Campbell.

HOLIDAY COST. $1750 per person, which includes return flights to Melbourne, 6 nights single or twin share accommodation, 7 days minibus hire, car ferry, vehicle insurance, fuel and extra kilometres.

PAYMENT. Please pay Chris $600 deposit by 30th November and the $1150 or $1650 balance by the 15th March. If you would like to have your own room please pay an extra $500 for single rooms. Ie. Total $2250 per person.

From Engadine station we will head down to the Engadine Lagoon on the Woronora River. We will follow the banks of the Woronora river downstream to The Needles. Following the old Illawarra Rd, we climb up to Barden Ridge.

We follow Barden Ridge towards Lucas Heights taking in the many lookouts on the way (See picture above). We descend back down to the Woronora river via the Winnells Wander track. After crossing the Woronora River (wet feet highly likely), we climb backup to Engadine for refreshments at the Engadine RSL before the short walk back to the station.

This walk contains off track walking with some rough and overgrown sections. It is unlikely we will be able to cross the Woronora river without getting wet feet. You may want to bring a pair of old volleys for the river crossing. You can cross bare-footed.

START: Engadine station at 9:00am (Meet Cnr Station St and Railway Parade)
FINISH: Engadine station at 3:00pm

TRANSPORT:
8:08am Waterfall via Banksia train from Central Platform 25 arrives Engadine station at 8:56am.

DISTANCE: 13Km
DURATION: 5-6hrs
GRADE: Medium/Hard. Bush bashing, river crossing, two hills.
