Sunday Fitness Walk: Drummoyne to Burwood: 14km Easy

We catch the ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 5, Side B to Drummoyne Ferry Wharf and strike out for Gladesville Bridge, the first ever computer designed bridge. Under the bridge we skip past Russell Lea and check out Chiswick, entering Abbotsford at a mansion linked to the poet/novelist Sir Walter Scott (d: 1832) and the biggest chocolate factory in the Southern Hemisphere. Well, the chocolate is gone, now. We take lunch at the Animal Quarantine Station, closed in 1980 but now a lovely park. NO SHOPS HERE; BRING A SANDWICH!

Following lunch we power through author/poet Henry Lawson (d: 1922) Memorial Park; here is stanza 1 of Faces in the Street (1888) conceived at Petersham Railway Station and one of his best poems, IMO:

They lie, the men who tell us in a loud decisive tone

That want is here a stranger, and that misery’s unknown;

For where the nearest suburb and the city proper meet

My window-sill is level with the faces in the street—

Drifting past, drifting past,

To the beat of weary feet—

While I sorrow for the owners of those faces in the street.

Lawson done, we zip past Five Dock (Italians, boxers, footy and high-flying convicts) to Canada Bay and Concord, both with links to epic battles in American wars; you must attend to find out! Uhm, there's also a famous lawn mowing machine ...

Henceforth, we alight into Burwood which started as a sheep farm but has produced 3 Prime Ministers (greedy lot!), the wedding of a Don, wonderful heritage buildings, a serial killer, creative core of a world famous rock-and-roll band and, of course, a Chinatown!

Distance: 14 km

Type of Walk: Well formed paths and great variation from heritage suburbs, historical characters, famous houses, and, yep a serial killer!

Difficulty: Easy, peasy.

Walking Pace: We will average 4.5 km per hour and check this stuff out.

Meeting Place and Transport: We depart from Wharf 5, Side B, Circular Quay with our Ferry departing at 10:27AM arriving Drummoyne at 10:51AM. Don't be late!

What to bring/wear: Trail runners/good walking shoes; 1.5 litres of water, refill along the way; hydrolytes; lunch; light rain jacket depending on conditions; sunscreen and a cap or hat with a wide brim. NO SHOPS, SO BRING YOUR FOOD.

Suggested Donation: $10

Pub: The Burwood Hotel
