Testing OpenAI Apps & Simplified Low Code Test Automation - Talk Double Header

Details

Hello All, for the September talk we have a double header from two great and established conference speakers talking about testing AI and Simplified, Low Code Solutions, graciously hosted by our hosting partners at Planit! We will also be doing our usual Open Mic for testers looking for work and companies looking to recruit testers!

Adrian Cole - Testing OpenAI Applications

Software engineers are increasingly using Generative AI to build applications like chatbots and content generation tools. Testing can be tricky, especially if against a billable account.

This talk overviews vocabulary common to the OpenAI SDK, such as “Large Language Model” (LLM). We’ll proceed to sample code and how to unit and integration test SDK functions. Examples will be concrete, in multiple languages and covering specific tools like Ollama and TestContainers. You’ll learn special cases to LLMs, like unpredictability of chat responses and how that impacts testability. Finally, we’ll discuss the motivating case study at Elastic: bullet-proofing OpenTelemetry code, so that logs, traces and metrics are reliably generated.

You’ll leave with an understanding of common concerns in programming OpenAI applications, and techniques you can use for anything similar.

Adrian Cole is is a software engineer working at Elastic. He’s been a routine contributor to open source for over fifteen years. Lately, he spends most of his time on OpenTelemetry. His past notable project work includes wazero, Zipkin, OpenFeign, and Apache jclouds. He has flown in from Singapore to speak at DataEngConf and has agreed to stay an extra day to speak at Sydney Testers!
