Details

Shep's Mound is a premier public viewing area situated right on the airport perimeter. It features two elevated platforms:

  • Upper Deck: Unobstructed views over the fence, ideal for photography.
  • Lower Deck: Spacious, sheltered area with seating—the best spot for the group to gather initially.
  • Vantage Point: Direct line of sight to Runway 16R/34L (the main north-south runway). You'll see aircraft taxiing just meters away and powerful take-offs or landings

Where we meet : Lower deck

How to get there :

By Car: Navigate to Ross Smith Avenue, Mascot. There is a dedicated free parking lot right at the mound. Arriving by 10:00 am or earlier is recommended to secure a spot.

By public transport:

The best way by public transport is to take airport train to the Domestic Terminal and catch the free "Blu Emu" shuttle bus. Get off at the Blu Emu stop for a shorter 10-minute walk (approx. 800m) to the mound.

Coffee:

If you want coffee here are a couple of options

  • Kingship Coffee: Great for specialty brews and quick breakfast toasts if you're coming via Mascot.
  • Seora Café: Offers consistent coffee and easy-to-carry wraps or sandwiches.

Photography:

Obviously to capture the best details bring along your longest and fastest lens.

However don’t be deterred if you are working with your phone. Creative panoramic shots or video of planes taking off can often be amazing.

Clothing and accessories:

The platforms are very exposed. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen as appropriater. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Even on a clear day, the "jet blast" and airport winds can be surprisingly gusty and dusty. Bring light, breathable layers.

Aircraft to watch for:

Internationals: Airbus A380s (Qantas, Emirates, Singapore Airlines), Boeing 787 Dreamliners (United, ANA, Air New Zealand), and A350s (Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways).

Domestic:

Qantas, Virgin, and Jetstar 737s and A320s, plus regional Dash 8 turboprops

Lunch

Since many of us may travel by car returning to the city for lunch may not be a great idea. Google has suggested the following which we can confirm on the day
