The Hero’s Autopsy: Should We Accept Our Saints Are Sinners?
Some of our most transformative contemporary and historical figures were people with things to hide. Gandhi fought British colonialism and gave his life to nonviolent resistance. He also left behind accounts of sleeping naked with young women as "celibacy tests," and wrote openly racist things about Black Africans during his South Africa years.
César Chávez organized one of the most important labor movements in American history. In addition to the more recent accusations of sexual abuse, he also allegedly surveilled and physically punished undocumented workers who crossed his picket lines.
Mother Teresa is synonymous with compassion for the dying poor. Former volunteers at her Calcutta hospices described appalling conditions, minimal medical care, and millions in donations that didn't seem to improve things — while she preached against contraception in communities dying of AIDS.
These aren't fringe allegations. They're documented. And they sit uncomfortably next to legacies that genuinely changed lives.
For tonight’s Questions That Matter, we’ll be attempting to perform an autopsy on the complex math of greatness: asking ourselves, at what point does the rot in the man or woman poison the entirety of the fruit of their labor? And when do the standards of their time (not ours) stop being an explanation and start being a potential, genuine moral alibi?
As usual, the goal of the night isn’t simply to agree, disagree, or learn. It’s also to connect through genuine, lively, interactive discussion and, potentially, to go to some of the unexpected and uncharted places that deep and free conversation can take us.
Since we started Questions That Matter, between 25 and 50 people have joined us weekly. When we wrap up, we hope you’ll mingle and exchange numbers. As polarized as the world is right now, one of the deepest connections still available to human beings is a shared meal, and every week many of us all go for dinner and you’re very welcome to join us.
Whether you’re in Chiang Mai for a short visit or you’re a long-term expat, we hope you can join us—not only to explore the deeper questions but to make new connections and friendships.
If possible, please support the venue, 4seas, by purchasing a beverage or a snack. They're kindly providing the space for us at no charge.
See you on Wednesday.
