NOTEI!!! New Time (Thursday, not Wednesday)
LOCATION & DAY: Johnny Pistolas in Adams Morgan on Thursday. We will meet on the 2nd floor.

The purpose of Thinkers and Drinkers is to facilitate casual but meaningful and interesting conversations with other people in a face-to-face setting. The topics cover a wide variety of issues and are different for every meeting. While conversations may get heated at times, we ask that all members be respectful of each other and refrain from personal insults.

# Topic: Identity: How Do You Define Who You Are?

"Who are you?" seems like a simple question, but the answer is anything but straightforward. Identity—the collection of characteristics, beliefs, and experiences that make you you—has been debated by philosophers for millennia and remains one of the most personal yet contentious topics in modern society.

## Competing Frameworks of Identity

Biological Identity: Some argue identity is rooted in our physical bodies—our DNA, brain structure, and biological sex. Neuroscientists have identified the mode networks in the brain, which activate when we think about ourselves, suggesting identity has a neurological basis.
Psychological Continuity: Philosopher John Locke proposed that personal identity is tied to consciousness and memory—you are the same person as your past self because you remember being that person. But what happens when memories fade or change? Are dementia patients still themselves?
Social Identity: We're also defined by our relationships and group memberships. Social identity theory suggests we derive significant meaning from categories like nationality, race, religion, gender, and profession. The phrase "I am a doctor" or "I am American" isn't just a description—it's identity.
Existential Choice: Existentialist thinkers like Sarte argued that "existence precedes essence"—we aren't born with a fixed identity but create ourselves through our choices and actions. You are what you choose to become.
Digital Identity: In the 21st century, many people have robust online identities that may differ from their offline selves. Are your social media personas, gaming avatars, and digital footprints part of "who you are"?

## Why Identity Matters Now

Identity has become increasingly politicized and fragmented. Debates rage over whether identity is fixed or fluid, chosen or assigned, individual or collective. Questions about gender identity, racial identity, and national identity dominate public discourse. Meanwhile, technology allows us to curate and modify our identities in unprecedented ways—from social media profiles to potential future developments in genetic engineering and brain-computer interfaces.
The Ship of Theseus paradox asks: if you replace every plank of a ship over time, is it still the same ship? Applied to humans: your cells regenerate every 7-10 years, your beliefs change, your memories are reconstructed—so are you still "you"?

## Questions to Consider:

  • If you lost all your memories tomorrow, would you still be the same person? What makes you you?
  • Is identity something discovered or something created? Are we born with a "true self" or do we invent ourselves?
  • How much of your identity comes from external labels (your job, nationality, ethnicity) versus internal feelings and choices?
  • Should society validate all self-defined identities, or are there limits? Who gets to decide?
  • In an age of AI and digital avatars, what separates a "real" identity from a constructed one?
  • Do we have one core identity, or multiple identities that shift based on context? Is this healthy or fragmentary?
  • When identity and truth claims conflict (e.g., "I identify as X" vs. "objectively you are Y"), which takes precedence?
