What we’re about

Do you love reading classic literature both old and new from around the world?

We are a Brisbane based, diverse group of people who love reading and discussing literature. We hope to have respectful, open, fun and challenging conversations.

Do you enjoy being surprised by other people’s opinions and hearing views that never occurred to you?
Are you tolerant and accept that others might have wildly conflicting opinions to yours?
If so, this could be the book club for you.

Sat, 10 May 2025, 1:30 pm AEST[Short Classics] OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck
Easts Leagues Club, Brisbane
Our Short Classics group provides an opportunity to read and discuss a short and easy-to-finish classic book while meeting others who share an interest in reading. You will also get a say in choosing future books for the group. This month we will read John Steinbeck's 1937 novella Of Mice and Men.

We will trial a new venue, Easts Leagues Club. You will need to sign up as a member to enter the club. It costs $2 for a yearly membership. This venue has excellent parking and a quiet atmosphere conducive to great discussions, as well as coffee, meals, snacks and drinks. Jane Austen's "Emma" - our choice for May. One of Austen's best known books and the subject of several movie adaptations.
There is so much in Emma about society and social interactions - so a great read and looking forward to the discussion!

Sat, 7 June 2025, 12:00 pm AEST[Long Classics] MIDDLEMARCH by George Eliot (parts 1-4)

We will read the first half of Middlemarch by George Eliot, inclusive of the first 4 books (up to p427 in the Penguin edition). Then for August we will read the second half.

We meet on the first Saturday of each month to read long classics in parts so that we can motivate, learn from and support each other through the lengthiest, greatest classics in world literature. This is a separate group from our regular classics meetup on the third Saturday of the month.
We want to support readers to finish these difficult books! So if you are having trouble or need some extra support, we have a WhatsApp group, or you can comment below or reach out by direct message. If others are struggling to keep up with the pace, we can adjust it if we have been too ambitious.

So for June we are coming back to an Australian novel - My Brilliant Career, by Miles Franklin.
An early romantic novel, My Brilliant Career is the story of Sybylla, a headstrong young girl growing up in early 20th century Australia. Sybylla rejects the opportunity to marry a wealthy young man in order to maintain her independence. As a consequence she must take a job as a governess to a local family to which her father is indebted.
So lots to discuss after reading Jan Austen's "Emma" in May, and so different after our March/ April choices of George Orwell's "1984" and Kafka's "The Trial"!!
