72nd Vienna Deep Learning Meetup: TiRex + Responsible Annotation
72nd Vienna Deep Learning Meetup: TiRex + Responsible Annotation
Hi Deep Learners, It took us a while, but our next Deep Learning Meetup is taking place on **April 28** at Frequentis. Our topics this time are: Zero-Shot Forecasting with TiRex and Responsible Annotation Services. \*\*\* **Agenda:** * 18:15 Arrival * 18:30 **Introduction** by the meetup organizers * **Welcome** by the host: Frequentis * 18:45 **Talk 1:** **TiRex: Zero-Shot Forecasting Across Long and Short Horizons with Enhanced In-Context Learning** by Sebastian Böck *(NXAI GmbH)* * 19:30 **Announcements** * **Networking Break** * 20:00 **Talk 2:** **Combining technological precision with social responsibility in training data preparation** by Andreas Schachl *(Responsible Annotation Services)* * 20:45 **Networking** * \~21:30 **Wrap up & End** \*\*\* **Important Arrival Information:** * the closest metro stop is U6 Tscherttegasse; however, the track is closed in direction Siebenhirten: you'd have to go to next stop (Schöpfwerk) and then ride 1 stop back * Alternatives: * from U6/S Meidling: 15 min walking * Badner Bahn: Am Schöpfwerk * by bike * if you arrive by car: parking spots available **Talk Details:** **Talk 1:** **TiRex: Zero-Shot Forecasting Across Long and Short Horizons with Enhanced In-Context Learning** TiRex is a compact pre-trained forecasting model for zero-shot time series forecasting across both short and long horizons. Built on an xLSTM backbone, it combines recurrent state tracking and strong in-context learning with contiguous patch masking and masked inference, enabling robust forecasting and efficient uncertainty estimation. This talk outlines the key architectural and training choices behind the model, including data augmentation strategies and large-scale pre-training. Results on public benchmarks show strong zero-shot forecasting performance together with fast inference and a low memory footprint. The talk also highlights how TiRex representations transfer to downstream tasks such as time series classification, illustrating the promise of forecasting models as broader foundation models for time series. **About the speaker:** Sebastian Böck is Lead Researcher at NXAI, specializing in Deep Learning, Sequence Modeling, and Time Series Forecasting. He received his PhD in Computer Science from JKU in Linz and his diploma degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from the Technical University in Munich. Long before his current focus on the efficiency and scalability of foundation models, he pioneered the application of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in Music Information Retrieval—spanning onset detection, beat tracking, and polyphonic transcription. This early work cemented his deep expertise in state-tracking and recurrent architectures. Today, his research at NXAI centers on overcoming the fundamental scaling and inference bottlenecks of modern AI through the extended Long Short-Term Memory (xLSTM) paradigm and its application across diverse modalities. **Talk 2:** **Combining technological precision with social responsibility in training data preparation** This presentation introduces Responsible Annotation Services (RAS), a specialized All-Austrian provider of high-quality data processing. Founded as a spin-off of the non-profit Responsible Annotation, RAS leverages a unique workforce of neurodivergent experts to deliver exceptional attention to detail, pattern recognition, and perseverance - helping to create reliable, ethical, and effective AI systems. Three distinct case studies will be presented demonstrating the versatility across modalities and industries: Bank Foyer Safety: A strategic collaboration with KEBA to refine their AI assistant, KeBob. This involved the meticulous labeling of human postures and mobility aid usage to enhance real-time emergency detection in semi-public banking environments. Text Annotation: A dive into our natural language processing project with Newsadoo, showcasing how our team structures complex textual data to train advanced language models with high semantic accuracy. Air-Vehicle Surveillance: A large-scale project with Frequentis involving the annotation of approximately 5 million video frames for airport monitoring, transforming raw footage into precise training data. **About the Speaker:** Andreas Schachl is a seasoned tech leader and open source enthusiast who believes that creating a better future requires action — not just ideas. Together with his friend Hans‑Peter Kranewitter, Andreas co‑founded Responsible Annotation Services, an AI‑focused venture that streamlines the entire data pipeline. Their key to success is a neuro‑diverse team of annotation experts who consistently deliver top‑tier results at high speed, even over prolonged periods. We are looking forward to welcoming you at our April Meetup. Your VDLM organizer team.

Walk & Talk Wien
Walk & Talk Wien
**Do you speak English? Then welcome to Walk & Talk!** This event is suited for all people who like to connect to other people and like to walk. The beauty of this regular event is that you are in the nature and you walk around 7 kilometers. In the meantime, if you feel for it, you talk, if not, you just walk. You do something for your health, get to know new people and you will feel much better. It’s FREE, all you need to do is to show up this Tuesday at no later than 1 pm at the U6 Spittelau exit to Donaukanal.

A hands-on migration and tuning workshop for DACH engineers moving from cloud APIs to local LLMs. 📅 **28.04.2026 · 17:30 – 22:00 CET** 📍 **fiskaly office — Mariahilfer Str. 36, Wien** ⚠️ **RSVPs are handled on Eventbrite, not Meetup.** Marking yourself as "going" here does not reserve your spot. Please register on Eventbrite 👉 [https://www.eventbrite.at/e/off-cloud-by-sovereign-ai-lab-tickets-1987825036194](https://www.eventbrite.at/e/off-cloud-by-sovereign-ai-lab-tickets-1987825036194) *** **ABOUT THIS SESSION** Your cloud API invoice is climbing. Your compliance team is asking harder questions. You've heard "just run it locally," but nobody has shown you how. And many engineers who already run locally are leaving meaningful headroom on their hardware. This session fixes both problems in the same room. **Two tracks:** 🔹 **Track A — Cloud to Local** For teams currently using hosted LLM APIs who have never run local inference. You walk in with an API key. You walk out with a working local model, a drop-in API swap, and a cost comparison template you can fill with your own workload numbers. 🔹 **Track B — GPU Whispering** For engineers already running local inference engines who want to go deeper than default settings. Quantization, VRAM layout, CPU memory bus saturation, real benchmarks on real hardware. Cross over during open lab. Ask the awkward questions. *** **WHO THIS IS FOR** * Technical founders, CTOs, and engineers whose pay-per-token invoices have become a fast-growing expense line * ML and backend engineers who want to get off the API treadmill * DevOps leads and infrastructure architects already running local models who want to go deeper than default settings * Sectors: healthcare, legal, manufacturing, financial services, media, startups *** **GROUND RULES** ✅ No sales pitches. Ever. ✅ Bring a laptop. If you're already running local models, bring that setup. If not, we'll get you started during doors (17:30–18:00), and a pre-event setup gist goes out the day before. ✅ All skill levels welcome, provided you write code. *** **⚠️ IMPORTANT — HOW TO RSVP** To secure your spot, you **must register on Eventbrite**: 👉 [https://www.eventbrite.at/e/off-cloud-by-sovereign-ai-lab-tickets-1987825036194](https://www.eventbrite.at/e/off-cloud-by-sovereign-ai-lab-tickets-1987825036194) Meetup RSVPs will not be counted toward attendance. 1st FloDo Art Circle workshop @Kulturankerzentrum Schlingermarkt
1st FloDo Art Circle workshop @Kulturankerzentrum Schlingermarkt
Great news everyone, were using next weekend for our very first workshop! We're changing locations to the Kulturankerzentrum Schlingermarkt, close to our usual location in Floridsdorf to create a safe space for all people interested in life modelling. This closed community workshop is just for you if you always thought about trying life modelling, but were shy or just not comfortable yet to pose in front of strangers. Susanna, an experienced model will lead the workshop and give tips about mindset and body on how to put yourself into pose. We will make a cozy and intimate environment where all people participating will be models, no external artists. Also: nudity is not necessary if you don't feel ready for that step, the workshop can also be partaken partly clothed or as you feel comfortable. Bring accessories or whatever makes you feel good about yourself and ready to try, it's all about taking a leap and connecting with your body. Other participants may of course capture your essence in a drawing if everyone is comfortable with it. The Kulturankerzentrum is located at Brünner Straße 34-38 a couple minutes walk from Bahnhof Floridsdorf. The location will be closed just for the workshop and snacks and drinks will be available at our bar. The cost of participating will be 20€. After the workshop (ends at 16:00) there will be an hour gap to our next open drawing session (see other event in Meetup), where all participants will be invited to try posing under real conditions, but of course without obligation. We are really excited to make our next step towards a healthy, open art community and would love to see you at our first workshop :) For any questions feel free to contact us any time here or on Instagram @Flodo_art_circle

trying again: Perchtoldsdorfer Heide
trying again: Perchtoldsdorfer Heide
Dear friends, After canceling this walk from 26. March, due to the bed weather, we try it some weeks later. In the Perchtoldsdorfer Heide we can see protected flowers like "adonis and pasque flower" (see photos), the typical vegetation in dry grasslands. Migration-birds begins to come back, I heard already the voices of chaffinch and blackcaps and a pair of kestrels is looking for a breading place. I hope to see you again, after this long time, in good health and with big motivation. Let us meet at the end of **Tramway 60 in Rodaun at 10:00** It will be usefull to bring drinking bottles because there is no restaurant in the Heide. But we can visit one after hiking, on the return to the station, crossing the city of Perchotldsdorf.

Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches. * **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain acts—like lying—are wrong regardless of the consequences; you can’t do a wrong thing for a right reason. * **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are “higher” than others, and that good intentions don’t redeem harmful outcomes. ## Discussion Questions 1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie. 2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?** 3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome? 4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend? 5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles? 6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way? 7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time? 8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
