Mandarin-English language exchange & Asian culture trivia
**Nihao! Looking for a relaxed after-work social with Asian culture trivia, Mandarin-English conversation, and friendly people?**
Join us for an easy-going Thursday evening at Loong Express in Fitzrovia. We will start with an Asian Culture Kahoot Quiz in small teams, then move into relaxed food, drinks, and Mandarin-English culture chat.
The quiz will include light questions about Asian and Chinese culture, including food, festivals, language, films, music, places, customs, travel, and everyday life. No expert knowledge is needed. The point is to laugh, guess, learn a few surprising things, and meet other culture-curious people in London.
After the quiz, we will open up a casual conversation session. Mandarin learners can practise simple phrases, Mandarin speakers can meet English speakers, and people who are mainly here for culture, food, travel, or socialising are very welcome too. This is not a formal class and nobody will be put on the spot.
We will use simple colour stickers to help people find conversation partners:
⚪ White sticker = learning Chinese
🔴 Red sticker = speaks Chinese
Come alone or bring a friend. Expect quiz rounds, conversation breaks, optional language practice, drinks, food, and a friendly after-work atmosphere.
**What to expect**
🎮 Asian culture Kahoot quiz: Light trivia about Asian food, festivals, language, films, music, places, customs, and fun facts.
👥 Small teams: Come alone, with a friend, or join a team when you arrive.
🗣️ Mandarin-English social: Practise Mandarin or English if you want, in a relaxed, no-pressure setting.
⚪🔴 Colour sticker matching: White = learning Chinese; red = speaks Chinese.
💬 Chitchat, food, and drinks: Time to chat, order food or drinks, and meet new people.
🏆 Friendly prizes: Small Loong Express vouchers for the quiz winners and participants.
**Food & drinks**
🐉 Loong Express has drinks, snacks, and food available to order onsite. Since they kindly host our meetup, we encourage everyone to order something during the evening if they can — a drink, tea, snack, or meal is a lovely way to support the venue while enjoying the quiz.
Food and drinks are ordered separately from the event.
**Who this is for**
You are warmly welcome if you are:
curious about Asian or Chinese culture;
looking for a relaxed Thursday night after work;
new to London and hoping to meet friendly people;
interested in food, language, travel, pop culture, or cultural trivia;
learning Mandarin, speaking Mandarin, or simply curious about Chinese language;
mainly here for culture, food, travel, or easy social conversation.
No prior knowledge of Asian culture or Mandarin is needed. Just bring your curiosity and a phone for Kahoot.
**RSVP & attendance**
Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend, so someone else can take your spot.

This is our regular Sunday gathering for anyone who enjoys Asian culture, food, languages, games, travel stories, and good company. Think of it as your Sunday ritual: a relaxed, welcoming space to slow down, connect, share a little of your world, and learn something new.
Each week has a light cultural focus, but the atmosphere stays easy and social. 🍱 **Bring your own snacks to share**
Snacks are not provided by the organiser, but you are warmly encouraged to bring a small snack to share — something from your culture, hometown, or simply something you enjoy. It’s one of the easiest ways to start a conversation.
*\*Loong Express also has food and drinks available to buy onsite. Since they kindly host our Sunday socials, we encourage everyone to support the venue by ordering a drink, tea, snack, or meal during the afternoon if you can.*

Supersense: From Superstition to Religion by Bruce M. Hood
In this event, we will discuss about a science or philosophy book chosen by London Science and Philosophy Book Club. The attendees will be divided into groups and each of them will focus on a chapter in the book. This month we will discuss about a fascinating book called Supersense: From Superstition to Religion by Bruce Hood. If you haven't read the book, it's no problem. I will bring you up to speed with the discussion materials.
We will meet in a nice lounge area at 6 p.m for introductions. Please come on time so you will not miss out on valuable discussion midway. If you end up in the waitlist, feel free to show up.
Book Description:
Why is it that Tony Blair always wore the same pair of shoes when answering Prime Minister's Questions? That John McEnroe notoriously refused to step on the white lines of a tennis court between points? And that President-elect Barack Obama played a game of basketball the morning of his victory in the Iowa primary, and continued the tradition the day of every following primary?
Superstitious habits are common. Do you ever cross your fingers, knock on wood, avoid walking under ladders, or step around black cats? Sentimental value often supersedes material worth. If someone offered to replace your childhood teddy bear or wedding ring with a brand new, exact replica, would you do it? How about £20 for trying on a jumper owned by Fred West?
Where do such feelings come from and why do most of us have them? Humans are born with brains designed to make sense of the world and that need for an explanation can lead to beliefs that go beyond reason. To be true they would have to be supernatural. With scientific education we learn that such beliefs are irrational but at an intuitive level they can be resistant to reason or lie dormant in otherwise sensible adults.
It now seems unlikely that any effort to get rid of supernatural beliefs or superstitious behaviours will be completely successful. This is not all bad news - such beliefs are a useful glue that binds us together as a society.
Combining brilliant insight with witty example Hood weaves a page-turning account of our 'supersense' that navigates a path through brain science, child development, popular culture, mental illness and the paranormal. After reading SuperSense, you will realize why you are not as reasonable as you might like to think - and why that might be no bad thing.
Agenda:
6 p.m to 7 p.m: Introduction and Socializing
7 p.m to 9:30 p.m: Book Discussion
9:30 p.m to late night: Drinks, Dinner or Feel free to go home
