Practical Philosophy Meetup - Toronto šØš¦
**NO PHILOSOPHY EXPERTISE REQUIRED!**
**šļø WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no āofficialā philosophy knowledge required! š
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community š
**š HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/KRy6VgwgGRm3hSGeYlAzDE), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itās important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:30-19:45 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start.
* 19:45-19:55 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:55-21:15 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ājump-offā questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itās not obligatory to answer them.
* 21:15-21:30 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:30 - The official meeting is over but itās a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**š§§PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a cafƩ, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!
**š WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
**š£** āI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatās right and wrongā - Ekam
š£ āI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.ā - Daniel
**š¤ FAQ**
* **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?**
No preparation is necessary. This isnāt a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weāll discuss it.
* **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?**
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* **Is it mostly men that attend?**
Surprisingly, no! Although often, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donāt meet in any dark rooms.
* **Can I come alone?**
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* **Can I be late?**
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* **Where do you meet?**
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/KRy6VgwgGRm3hSGeYlAzDE) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
š¤**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) EnterpriseāGrade DevOps for Microsoft Fabric
Modern Microsoft Fabric projects often start with builtāin Git integration and deployment pipelinesābut at enterprise scale, those capabilities alone are rarely sufficient. As environments grow in size and complexity teams need more advanced tools and patterns to manage Fabric artifacts reliably across development, test, and production.
In this session, we will:
\- Review common enterprise lifecycle challenges in Microsoft Fabric
\- Introduce advanced DevOps tooling and automation patterns used to address them
\- Walk through a realistic implementation pattern that shows how these tools fit together in practice
This session is designed for data and platform engineers and architects responsible for operating Microsoft Fabric in production. If youāre already using Git integration and deployment pipelines and are looking to extend them with more scalable, repeatable, and enterpriseāready CI/CD practices, this session will help you understand when and how to go beyond the defaults.
*Come at 5:30 pm have some pizza and chat for a bit. The presentation starts at 6:00 pm.*

John and William Hogg, sons to James Hogg, subdivided the marshy land that became "Hoggs Hollow."
It took a little time to encourage settlers to develop the land due to the inhospitable environment, but settlers moved in over the following decades. With the historic village of York Mills adjacent, a school, post office, pottery, blacksmith, livery, stable, store, cemetery and St. John's Anglican Church served Scottish, Irish and English immigrants.
The history of modern Hogg's Hollow began in the 1920s with the creation of lots, and homes reflected the beauty of the English countryside. The Baron Renfrew School opened in 1925 to replace a structure at 45 York Mills Road that was destroyed by fire.
Hogg's Hollow is certainly far from the tourist centre to the south, and is well worth exploring. With Yonge Street its main street, the community has a fascinating history that has long gone uncovered. Give Hogg's Hollow a look and you might stay awhile. I promise!
This walk is for all walking levels. Please dress for the season and bring water. Our Hogg's Hollow adventure walk begins at the Yonge Street doors of the York Mills Subway station. We head south and downhill and return to our starting point. Hope to see you there!

Lunch at Hawker (after Vegetarian trek for omnivores)
This is a companion event for [Vegetarian trek for omnivores](https://www.meetup.com/hike-to-eat/events/313774090). You don't have to do the hike to join this, but it's more rewarding if you do.
[Hawker](https://www.hawker.to/) is perhaps the most innovative vegan restaurant in Toronto. Drawing inspiration from one of the oldest vegetarian traditions, several of their dishes fuse Indian influences with modern sensibilities. Take their biryani, for example, spiked with smoked poblano and lavender. Other dishes reflect the global experiences of the chefs. It's fine dining standards with casual prices.
If there are many people on the waitlist and it's at least 5 days before the event, we may arrange another table.
**Payment**
* The $5 event fee is a deposit. It will be refunded when you show up.
* After signing up for the event, you have 24 hours to e-transfer the fee to globaltorontoeats@gmail.com
* If you're on the waitlist, you don't have to pay the deposit until a space opens up. You have 24 hours to pay the deposit after you've made it off the waitlist.
* When sending the e-transfer, please add a note that mentions your meetup.com name.
* If you don't pay in time, you will be removed from the attendee list. The spot will be given to the next person on the waitlist.
**Cancellation and refund policy**
* You can cancel and get a full refund 5 calendar days before the event. For example, if the event is on Friday 7pm, you can cancel without penalty anytime before the preceding Sunday 11:59pm.
* No refunds within 5 calendar days of the event, unless someone can be found to take your place.
* Full refund if the event is cancelled or rescheduled.

The story of historic Little India is a true Toronto success story, a unique look at a neighbourhood and the people who call it home. But the story is not always a happy one. Like all other areas in Toronto, Little India started out as a purely English - Anglican area and was repeatedly changed as other immigrants opted to leave the security of the downtown core for outer areas.
With the opening of the Naaz theatre in 1972, the community that became Little India started to take shape, but in Toronto the forces that developed communities were different in that part of the city sandwiched between Leslieville to the south, and Greektown to the north.
With a strictly Anglo-Saxon pro-British community entrenched for over 100 years, now changing to include south Asians, the area was seen as a rather depressed area, or an area in transition, and violence was an unfortunate part of life. Racial tensions increased dramatically with the influx of south Asians.
But by the 1980s and 1990s the district had found its feet, and Little India was a popular Toronto district and tourist attraction, with visitors pouring in from around the world to partake of the richness. A true cultural enclave in Toronto! A fascinating history and a fascinating community awaits! This tour has been revised a few times to add more historic information to the walk, it has been revised once again for 2026 with new landmarks and stories attached. Should be a fascinating walk!
This walk is for all fitness levels. The meeting place for our walking adventure is on the southwest corner of Greenwood Avenue and Gerrard Street East!
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person!

Artists who create (Second group meeting!)
Hi everyone, we will be having our second Artists who create meetup group at the food court (Near the A & W) of Erin Mills Town Centre, and we look forward to seeing everyone who can make it this coming Saturday, April 11th at 5 pm. This will be a very casual and fun moment to create, connect and engage in conversation as we work on our own art projects. I also look to have a theme for this session to ignite our creativity and give us something to go off of if we're starting from scratch. The theme is Life, and the powerful thing it can be to be alive despite all the uncertainty and struggles we might face. I will be providing some art materials for those who need them, but of course, it's highly encouraged to bring your own. Here is the full address of the mall:
[5100 Erin Mills Pkwy, Mississauga ON L5M 4Z5](https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=5d311852eda8388a98752d9e60a559294e636187efdb6acdad7ff1b4b53e5c93JmltdHM9MTc3MjMyMzIwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=15c0c239-89a7-69ee-04c2-d4b288666820&u=a1L21hcHM_Jm1lcGk9MH5-RW1iZWRkZWR-QWRkcmVzc19MaW5rJnR5PTE4JnE9RXJpbiUyME1pbGxzJTIwVG93biUyMENlbnRyZSZzcz15cGlkLllORERFRDhERjc4MTg0OUMxOSZwcG9pcz00My41NTg2NTA5NzA0NTg5ODRfLTc5LjcxMTU3ODM2OTE0MDYyX0VyaW4lMjBNaWxscyUyMFRvd24lMjBDZW50cmVfWU5EREVEOERGNzgxODQ5QzE5fiZjcD00My41NTg2NTF-LTc5LjcxMTU3OCZ2PTImc1Y9MSZGT1JNPU1QU1JQTA)

We will discuss options trading and investing strategies, as well as the skills needed to start. It is a **casual meetup to meet people who are interested in trading or building a career around it, especially algorithmically. No "financial gurus" are welcome.**
Join us for a meetup where we share trading ideas, and connect with others who share a common interest in investing.
Algorithmic trading is commonly used by large institutional investors and market makers, but it is also accessible to retail traders. It offers several advantages over manual or discretionary approachesāparticularly in minimizing psychological errors that often impact human traders.
Some of the topics we usually discuss:
\- Reasons for investing
\- Limitations of being a retail trader
\- Practical tools: brokers\, APIs\, data sources\, real\-time implementation
\- Brainstorming ideas: strategies that may be working today
**Note this even is not sponsored or endorsed by any business where we are meeting. We are just using their space for casual meetup event.**
**Please no promotion of MLM, pyramid schemes, self promotion to paid services, affiliate promotion, paid subscriptions or similar stuff.**

Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant.
