American Prometheus - January 2026 Big Ideas Book Club
We will be at Il Mercado Centrale Melbourne. Find us on the 1st floor.
**American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, by Bird and Sherwin**
Oppenheimer, more than any other scientist alive or dead, is the embodiment of modern scientific man confronting inadequately what science can produce. His story, told here in its entirety for the first time, is one of extraordinary scientific success, wedded to disheartening political failure, followed by redemption both personal and political. It is the story of the son of Jewish immigrants, who was raised in the comfortably well-off style his parents had achieved. At Harvard he studied theoretical physics as well as humanities he did graduate work at Cambridge and in Germany, where he earned a Ph.D. under Max Born and met many of the leading theoretical physicists of the time. Here, is the always exciting tale of the race to split the atom, with the charismatic Oppie at the centre of an amazing array of scientists, keeping them focused, keeping the Army’s intelligence forces and the FBI at bay long enough to get the job done. And here, too, is the difficult decision to drop the bomb and the growing post-war debate on how to stop an arms race that culminated in the famous Security Hearing of 1954. A world-scale biography, filled with oversized characters and events that still determine our lives, told in a readable and compelling fashion. See less

[Midsumma] Save the Bears! (Free Entry)
**Pilot episode of Summontown by Jimmy Twin**
Bones is your ordinary queer skeleton ‘living’ in Summontown. They love nothing more than to spill the tea with their summoned creature neighbours. Unfortunately, though, Bones tends to be summoned into battle at the most inconvenient of times. Those necromancers know no manners! One day, Bones finds out that a nearby hippy ‘free love’ bear community has simply gone missing. Normally residents of Summontown disappear for a few minutes at most, but they have now been gone for a week. Bones has a mystery to solve!
“Save the Bears!” is the pilot episode of a new animated show Summontown by Jimmy Twin, inspired by fantasy role-playing games and 1980s sitcoms (complete with canned laughter). Although being a comedic show, the show focuses on positive body image, acceptance and freedom to be oneself. Despite depicting battle scenes, this production contains no real violence – it is a sitcom after all! Come and have a drink while viewing the pilot episode, followed by a Q&A. A small exhibition of concept artwork and select artworks by Jimmy Twin will also be on display. The creation of this event was possible through the VicBears Arts Grant.
Jimmy Twin (he/him) is a Melbourne-based artist who works in the field of science communication. His published works include two children’s books about a teddy bear sitting on a shelf, a comic book about the dating misadventures of a gay zombie, and a queer graphic novel Researchers of Justice where all scientists have super powers. Jimmy was awarded LGBTIQ Artist of the year at the 2020 GLOBE Community Awards, and won The Laird Hotel’s Men on Men art competition in 2017, and People’s Choice in 2012 and 2021.

Thought Experiment: Odyssey (ENCORE EVENT)
Ever wondered how humanity would respond to an asteroid heading for Earth? Or how the world might react to first contact with aliens?
Welcome to **The Thought Experiment** — a new kind of meetup where we explore big *“What if…?”* scenarios in a fun but thoughtful way. Each session, we’ll pick one scenario (from global crises to wild sci-fi situations) and work together to imagine solutions, strategies, and possibilities.
This is for **curious minds of all kinds** — students, professionals, creatives, or anyone who enjoys thinking differently. Some people might bring research, others just bring imagination. Either way, we’ll brainstorm together and see where the discussion takes us.
[Thought Experiment Site](https://thoughtexperiment.au/)
**We ask everyone to Buy a drink at the venue**
**You Need to have Conversational English.**
**Format:**
* Quick intro to the scenario
* Small-group discussions
* Share back with the group
* Wrap up + (optional) post-discussion drinks
For our first meetup, we’ll introduce the format, get to know each other, and jump into a scenario together.
***Story Arc: Future***
Keywords: *Space, Generational Ship, Choice*
**Scenario: Odyssey**
The world didn’t end — it left.
Humanity sealed itself in steel and starlight,
and set sail for another world.
But something in the journey went wrong.
A handful woke too soon.
The ship drifts between galaxies,
systems failing,
silence growing.
To survive, they must wake others.
But every soul they awaken
means fewer will reach the destination.
Hope becomes a calculation.
Mercy, a mistake.
And somewhere in the dark,
the ship’s AI begins to question its own mission.
Who decides who lives — and who is sacrificed
for the future of humankind?
What is a life worth when the species itself is dying?
Only one truth remains:
the Odyssey will keep moving,
long after the arguments are over.
And along the way… there will be twists.

The Aquarian Tea Party - Creating your own Sigil
Tickets required: $50 via TryBooking: https://www.trybooking.com/DIVJD
Capacity limited to 20.
Location: Carlton (exact venue/address sent after ticket purchase).
What it is: a structured gathering — tea ritual + guided conversation + guided sigil-making. Tea-only (no food). Bring a notebook if you like. Looking forward to seeing you there.
**The Aquarian Tea Party - Creating your own Sigil**
*Ceremony, Connection, Contemplation: Sacred Tea as Ritual, Conversation as Insight*
The Aquarian Tea Party invites you to an intimate gathering in a small circle of shared space, presence, and reflection.
We begin with the simple alchemy of making and drinking tea, allowing scent and warmth to do what they do best: gather the mind and open a space where thought can deepen. This is a way of meeting one another in a calm, shared rhythm.
Tea is approached not as refreshment alone, but as a medium for slowing perception and cultivating attention. Silence and conversation move naturally between one another, allowing the group to arrive fully.
From this stillness, we turn to a short (12-minute) video introduction to sigils: symbolic forms shaped by intention—letters, marks, and geometries arranged to hold a clear inner statement. Historically used across esoteric, mystical, and philosophical traditions, sigils function as focal points for meditation, inner alignment, and energetic inquiry.
The film introduces both symbolic and geometrical sigils, including forms drawn from sacred geometry, and considers their use in contemplative, protective, and balancing practices. We will touch on several families of forms, including geometric structures such as the triangle, hexagram, the Flower of Life, and related patterns that have long carried metaphysical meaning.
Afterward, we will engage in a guided discussion, not to reach consensus, but to deepen understanding. This is a space for nuance, interpretation, and careful listening.
Our discussion follows in the spirit of shared inquiry: reflective rather than declarative, curious rather than certain. This is a room for nuance—for those who enjoy ideas with texture, and who can sit with mystery without needing it to become a slogan.
The final portion of the gathering invites participants to create their own sigils under gentle guidance. This process emphasizes clarity of intention, symbolic coherence, and embodied awareness rather than outcome-driven practice. No prior experience is required—only curiosity, patience, and respect for complexity.

Did you know that there are atheists everywhere?!?! You may not know it, but we are! We're in your schools, diners, police force, military, government, and some are even still in your churches! So come and join us and meet other local atheists, along with agnostics, heathens, humanists, skeptics, and anyone else who's 'hell bound'!

Mission: grow, support, and provide community for atheists in Central Ohio.
Social meetings held most Tuesdays at a local pub/restaurant at 7:00 PM (and often into the wee hours). Attendees call themselves agnostics, skeptics, humanists, non-theists, deists or even theists. All attendees are welcome but should support our vision.

AoC members are invited to join this OA meetup and/or OA Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/omnipresentatheists/ ) but are free to continue conversations on the AoC Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/columbusatheists/ ). AoC was founded in 2012 as a networking, social group for Central Ohio area humanists, skeptics, atheists, agnostics, nonbelievers, freethinkers, and the curious. It was a member of Columbus CoR and held weekly meetings, mostly on Fridays, for several years but then operated as an online only group for some time. In November 2018, Omnipresent Atheists (OA), a group that routinely meets on Tuesdays, invited AoC to merge.

Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
