For those who are still in Brussels the last weekend before Christmas, I propose a somewhat different hike with not one, but two Christmas markets to visit! We will start the hike in the little town of Soignies, best known for its quarries where the famous "pierre bleue" is cut. After about 2 hours we will reach the Chateau de Thieusies, where this weekend the artisanal Christmas market "Chemins de Creation" is held. We will stop for about 1 to 1.5h, depending on how much there is to do. I assume there will also be food, but I can't guarantee, as I've never been there (i.e. bring something for lunch to be on the safe side). From there we'll continue the hike for about another 3 hours to Mons, with its Christmas market taking place on the Grand Place and some other locations, so plenty of opportunities for glühwein, food or whatever reward you feel you deserve at that point ;-) As the number of participants is limited, it is important that you manage your registration responsibly: only sign up if you really intend to come and cancel as soon as you know you can’t (this also goes for people on the waiting list!). We will try to keep close to an average speed of about 5 km/h. We will walk mainly on unpaved roads. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude.
