Let's read The Odyssey!
(In preparation for Christopher Nolan’s 2026 film)

👉 I will be reading The Odyssey translated by Emily Wilson.

This translation is widely praised for being clear, modern, and highly accessible, making it a great option whether this is your first time reading Homer or your first time revisiting the epic as an adult. I’ve just ordered my copy from Amazon, but you’re welcome to pick it up however works best for you — Amazon, local bookstore, or the library.
The intention is to read The Odyssey together at a reasonable pace and enjoy the conversation — not to turn this into homework.

### 🎬 Why This Book Club?

This reading group is inspired by The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, which is scheduled for theatrical release on July 17, 2026.

The film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway, and will use groundbreaking IMAX technology to bring Homer’s epic journey to the screen.

By reading the book in advance, we’ll:

  • Understand the characters, themes, and structure
  • Catch deeper layers in the film
  • Enjoy the movie with context rather than confusion

📌 A separate Meetup to see the movie together — and discuss it afterward — will be posted much closer to the release date.

### 📚 About the Translation

I recommend The Odyssey because it is:

  • Written in clear, contemporary language
  • Faithful to the original while easier to follow
  • Especially good for group discussion

You’re welcome to read a different translation if you prefer, but discussions will generally reference the Emily Wilson version.

### 🗓️ How This Book Club Will Work

  • This Meetup is an RSVP of interest for a recurring book club
  • We’ll likely meet bi-weekly (weekly if there’s strong interest)
  • Meetings will be:
  • Online at first
  • Possibly in-person later (e.g., a cafĂ© or public space) if the group gains momentum and interest

The goal is relaxed, thoughtful conversation — not rushing through the text.

### 👥 Who This Is For

  • Curious readers who want to tackle a classic without pressure
  • Film lovers preparing for Nolan’s adaptation
  • People interested in myth, storytelling, psychology, and culture
  • You’re welcome even if you don’t plan to see the movie

### âś… How to RSVP

  • RSVP “Yes” if you’re interested in joining
  • Once we see interest levels, I’ll follow up with:
  • A suggested reading schedule
  • Proposed meeting cadence (weekly vs bi-weekly)
  • First meetup date and format

This is about slowing down, reading something timeless, and sharing the journey — very much in the spirit of The Odyssey itself.

Hope you’ll join 📖✨
