Sorry men, this one is a women-only guided snowshoe hike led by experienced and capable female TrailBound Project instructors and guides.
This supportive and welcoming snowshoeing adventure will take us to Balsam Lake Mountain for an amazing view from the oldest fire tower in NY at the mountain's peak. It’s the perfect way for women to connect, build confidence, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Catskills in winter.
The Balsam Lake Fire Tower snowshoe hike is a moderate to challenging 6-mile out and back hike with 1,200' of elevation up & down that we'll take at a leisurely pace.
Bring your own snowshoes and microspikes, or add rentals for the day - $15 for snowshoes and/or $5 for microspikes. We will have varied sizes to choose from at the beginning of the hike.
We’ll begin in peaceful forested terrain, weaving through snow-covered evergreens as we gradually gain elevation. As the climb becomes more sustained, we’ll take breaks to enjoy the winter quiet and soak in the beauty of the frozen landscape. Higher up, the trees open slightly and the snowy ridgelines emerge, revealing the rugged charm of the Western Catskills.
At the summit, we’ll reach the historic Balsam Lake Mountain Fire Tower. On a clear winter day, far-reaching views stretch across the Catskills and beyond — an incredible reward for the effort. You’ll experience panoramic winter scenery in all directions before we make our descent back toward the trailhead.
Along the way, we’ll discuss winter layering, moisture management, traction devices, food and water strategies, and other essential cold-weather skills to help you feel confident and capable on more challenging winter hikes. This trip is perfect for women seeking a deeper challenge, a stronger sense of accomplishment, and an empowering day in the mountains with a supportive group.
Although we're hoping for lots of snow to make it a snowshoeing wonderland, the weather is completely unpredictable. If we end up with less-than-ideal snowy conditions, we'll still have a great time with microspikes and go over winter hiking best practices and skills, such as how to dress, the different gear we carry, and other seasonal trip planning considerations to make winter hiking just as comfortable and enjoyable as the rest of the year.
Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
