About us
The Valley Forge Audubon Society (VFAS) is a chapter of the National Audubon Society serving those residing in Southeastern Pennsylvania, including Delaware and Chester Counties, and parts of Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties. Our mission is to preserve birds, other wildlife, and their habitats by promoting appreciation and stewardship of the local natural environment through education and active participation. VFAS offers regular bird walks, hikes, events, and educational programs. Valley Forge Audubon Society is committed to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in the birding community and beyond. We are excited to bring the joys of birding – the fun of seeing or hearing birds, the social benefits of being part of a like-minded community, and the health and wellness benefits humans receive from spending time in nature – to “everyone and every body”, regardless of someone’s physical, mental, emotional, or societal challenges. Long-time birders, ‘fledgling’ birders, able-bodied birders, and those with disabilities and health concerns are all welcome at VFAS’s programs.
We offer a number of outings that are accessible for those with various access challenges and/or health concerns.

A Great Backyard Bird Count Field Trip in Swarthmore's Crum Woods
Crum Woods - VFAS, 2 S. Chester Road (Route 320), Swarthmore, PA, USJoin the Great Backyard Bird Count to watch, learn about, count, and celebrate birds! The 202-acre Crum Woods in Swarthmore, one of the last largely forested areas in Delaware County, offers crucial habitat for birds. On this outing we will look for (and organizers will record in eBird) Swarthmore’s winter birds, common and uncommon. Birds experienced during last February’s walk include the Golden-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Bald Eagle, Cooper’s Hawk, Hairy Woodpecker, and Red-shouldered Hawk.
All levels of birding experience are welcome. Children are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. Heavy rain, slush, or heavy snow cancels. No registration is required.
Trails in the Crum Woods are earthen, hilly, and rocky. If it has rained or snowed recently, trails are likely to be muddy, slippery, sandy, rutted, and possibly icy. Good footwear is essential. Walking poles may be helpful. While we will alter the route if the trails are too difficult to traverse, you walk at your own risk. Please dress for the weather.
Bring binoculars if you have them. A few pairs will be available at the meeting site. The organizers will keep a list of birds observed during the outing which will be posted to the Valley Forge Audubon Society website where all participants can access it.
Please note that there is no restroom on site.
This outing is co-sponsored by the Swarthmore Bird Town Working Group
