Shoot the moon! (The Wolf Moon)
Details
***Attention***
I unfortunately, cannot attend this event, I did the planning, and I am excited for this moonrise however life threw me a curveball and I will be tied up this weekend. So I am posting this if anyone wants to volunteer to organize this photo get together. If someone wants to step up and lead this event, I would be very thankful or if any of you just want to go on your own. I think this will be a great time. By Saturday we will have just had a few days of stormy weather and it should be clouds, but no rain, which is perfect for a sunset.
***End Attention Haha***
What: Supermoon Sunset Shoot at Surfers Point (Wolf Moon)
Date: Saturday, January 3, 2026
Time: 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Location: Surfers Point at Seaside Park, Meet near the north end of the promenade. (See Map)
Event Description:
Join us for the first Supermoon of 2026! We’ll be meeting at Surfers Point to capture the sunset over the water and then turning our lenses eastward to watch the massive "Wolf Moon" rise over the city and hills.
This is a great opportunity to shoot two distinct scenes in one location. We will start with the classic Ventura sunset looking west toward the pier and C-Street. As the light fades into the "blue hour," the Supermoon will make its grand entrance.
The Plan:
- 4:30 PM: Meet & Greet at Surfers Point (look for the tripods!).
- 4:56 PM: Sunset. We'll capture the golden hour light hitting the waves and the silhouette of the Channel Islands.
- 5:25 PM: Moonrise. The Supermoon will rise over the Ventura hills behind us. This is the perfect time to capture the moon looming large over the landscape against a twilight sky.
What you might want to Bring:
- Camera & Tripod (essential for low light/moon shots).
- Telephoto lens (200mm+) to make the moon look huge.
- Wide-angle lens for sunset seascapes.
- Remote shutter release (optional but helpful).
- Warm layers – it gets chilly quickly once the sun drops!
Open to other location ideas.
While Surfers Point is fantastic for sunset, I am open to suggestions for a secondary location that might offer a better angle for the Eastern moonrise. Maybe these?
- Grant Park / Serra Cross: Offers an elevated view of the moon rising over the Topatopa Mountains.
- Ventura Pier: Great for looking back at the town with the moon above.
- Harmon Canyon: For a more nature-focused foreground.
If you have a favorite spot for moonrise, please leave a comment below! We can decide as a group if we want to move locations after the sunset shoot.
See you there!
