The City and Its Uncertain Walls by Haruki Murakami

Both of these novels have been translated into English from their original languages and if that's not a connection between them, I don't know what is.

This is a period memoir of a woman who travelled the coastal waters of BC with her children in the 1920s and 1930s

The second book is the moody Sointula by Bill Gaston about a woman who trades privilege for a stolen kayak and a journey through grief and the west coast wilderness
