John Dean Park hike

Details
Situated on top of Mount Newton in North Saanich, John Dean Park overlooks the pastoral Saanich Peninsula, the Gulf Islands and the Cascade Mountains. It is home to one of the last stands of old-growth Douglas Fir on the Saanich Peninsula. A number of hiking trails, varying in degrees of difficulty, wind through the inspiring forest across the south and east face of Mount Newton. On Sat Sept 13th, the Victoria Small Dog Hiking Group will head out for adventure as we tackle a total of 9 different trails that circumnavigate Mount Newton.
Our hike starts at the Homewood Ravensview parking lot off McTavish Road. (See "how to find us" section for driving directions.)
We'll head out on the Barrett Montford Trail which takes us around the NE side of John Dean Park. This trail is narrow at times, with a moderate drop-off on the left side, but it's very fun to hike. While the trail is well maintained, there are obstacles such as rocks and branches to negotiate, plus an abundance of rocky steps.
As we approach the South end of the park, in quick succession we'll hit the Gail Wickens, Woodward, Switchback, and Surveyors Trails. We'll stop at Cy's Viewpoint and take in the awesome view out to the Saanich Inlet.
As we carry on, we'll experience plenty of ups and downs, and more of our area's unique coastal nature. Forest scenery abounds, and shortly after we turn on to the West Viewpoint Trail, our route will dip down to Lily's Pond, and yes, there can sometimes be bugs around the pond, so insect repellent and/or long sleeves is recommended.
A short jog up Bob Boyd's Climb takes us to our last long stretch of walking, the Slektain Trail, which will close the loop when we get back to the Barrett Montford Trail. From there, it's just a loud shout to get back to the parking lot.
Overall, this is an incredible hike but it should only be completed by those with good mobility. It is a solid intermediate level hike rather than easy.
Bringing good hiking footwear is a must, and if you don't think your pup can make it the whole way, a doggie backpack or sling will come in handy. Don't forget water for you and your dog.
