New Year’s Day Hike at the Calico Hills Trail - Red Rock Canyon NCA

What better way to ring in the new year than with a beautiful hike. The Calico Hills Trail is a moderately tough over 7 mile there and back hike along the base of the Red Rock Hills from the Red Springs Picnic Area to the Sandstone Quarry to which offers fantastic views of the colored sandstones at Red Rocks. The total elevation gain to Sandstone Quarry is just over 1500ft with a number of up and down slopes that make for a challenging hike. The trail is also rocky and dusty in places, and there’s a bit of minor scrambling along a short shoot where sturdy footwear with lugs is recommended. Not sure of the weather, but there’s little shade and it could be quite sunny where head cover is advisable.

Be sure to bring adequate hydration in consideration of your BMI, and perhaps snacks, though I usually provide energy food (chocolate) for the general consumption. Dogs and kids are welcome provided they’re strong hikers, well behaved and their owner cleans up after them. I’ll email the weather forecast to attendees the day prior and make mention of the status of the hike.
