We meet at North Pond 2610 N Cannon Dr, Chicago, IL 60614. On previous walks there has been free parking on N Cannon Dr and N Stockton Dr.
Walking South we pass the Peggy Notebaert nature museum. Crossing Fullerton we enter the Alfred Caldwell Lilly Pool. Heading East we get to the lakefront Trail and continue North and stop at the first of several monuments that will be included in this walk. First up is "A Signal of Peace" by Cyrus Edwin Dallin; 1890". This was displayed at the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and then donated to the City.
Next up is a "the Chevron" made in 2007. Has a controversial history.
Continuing North, we pass the area called Belmont Rocks. a space where the local gay community gathered between the 1960s and 1990s. “The Rocks” were about claiming the right to be out of the shadows and out of the closet.
As we continue walking we pass The Alarm (by John J. Boyle; 1884) It is the oldest sculpture on Chicago Park District property.
This brings us to Self-Portrait a 30-foot-high sculpture by iconic HIV/AIDS activist and artist, the late Keith Haring. Bold, bright green and nearly three stories high, Self-Portrait is the largest iteration of this popular sculpture that has ever been fabricated.
Next, Belmont Harbor home of the Chicago Yacht Club. We will walk all around the harbor including passing the Bill Jarvis Bird Sanctuary and the Lincoln Park Archery Range
We head back crossing under Du Sable Lake Shore Drive. On the return walk we pass the General Philip Henry Sheridan Monument. The Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Monument. Elks National Memorial and Headquarters, The John Peter Altgeld Monument, the Alexander Hamilton Monument
