On this walk we check out Steelworker's Park and the ore walls. In the heyday of US Steel, these 30 ft high - 1/2 mile long concrete structures carried a massive crane that unloaded large barges coming from across Lake Michigan. The iron ore and other bulk products required in the making of steel were off-loaded and stored in between the ore walls. These walls have not been used since US steel closed in the early 90's and the cost to teardown those walls would be prohibitive so these will probably be here for the next millennia.
We will continue walking this area and cross over Lake Shore Drive and
walk the neighborhood. The overall neighborhood is called South Chicago. Within that area are 4 smaller neighborhoods - Ainsworth; the Bush, Millgate Cheltenham/South Chicago and Calumet. We will be mostly walking The Bush.
6 - 6.3 miles 90% paved
Lunch: TBD
