Theme - Self-Compassion

A gentle walk between Island Bay and Houghton Bay, exploring the little beaches and trails, giving some times to stop and soak in the view. It can be a silent, self reflecting journey, or a space to share what you’ve done to be a friend to yourself on your mental health journey

What is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion is treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend, especially during times of struggle or failure

Examples of Self-Compassion

  • When you make a mistake: Tell yourself, "It's okay, I'm learning, and I'll do better next time," instead of being self-critical.
  • When you feel inadequate: Remind yourself that feelings of inadequacy are a shared human experience, not a personal failing.
  • Listen to your needs: Say yes to things you need, like making time for exercise, a doctor's appointment.
  • Practice mindfulness: Allow yourself to feel your emotions without judgment and be present with what you're experiencing.
  • Use affirmations: Remind yourself, "I am good inside," or "I am worthy of loving kindness".
  • Ask for what you need: Give yourself permission to ask for help or support when you need it.
  • Provide for yourself: Actively take care of your mind and body with good food, rest, and positive activities.
