Bio: Dr. Robert Michael Pyle was a mentor to Idie Ulsh, founder of WBA. He has studied Washington butterflies since 1964, alongside Jon Pelham since 1967. His field guides Watching Washington Butterflies, Butterflies of Cascadia, and (with Caitlin LaBar) Butterflies of the Pacific Northwest have been our companions in the field for fifty-two years, alongside his Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Butterflies (1981, still in print). An essayist, poet, and novelist as well as lepidopterist and ecologist, he has a fifth collection of poems just out (Swimming with Snakes) and he is currently at work on a sequel to his novel Magdalena Mountain, to be titled The Silver Satyr. Bob founded the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in 1971 and is an Honorary Life Fellow of both the Royal and American Entomological Societies.
