Umtanum Ridge (Moderate Hike)

Details

Come out and hike up Umtanum Ridge!

Distance: 6-8 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,100 ft.
Difficulty: Moderate

I’ve had enough of the snow for a week or two, so let’s have a nice, dry walk in the desert instead and look for pretty wild flowers. Trip reports from last week said that many of the best spring cactus flowers, bitterroot, and others were in full bloom, so let’s get out there and see it before they go away. In the distance, we can gaze back at the snowy peaks of the Cascades while we look forward to the coming summer hiking season.

The hike is moderate overall, but the first few miles are a little steep, so hiking poles and good boots are advised. It can be windy up on the ridge, so bring a jacket or windbreaker. Also, there will be no trees or shade, so a hat and sunscreen are important!

The alltrails map is for the slope up to the ridge only. Once everyone is up the ridge, we will walk along the ridge for a few miles looking for more flowers and enjoying the wide desert views until we are satisfied.

Riders should give $25 to their drivers for gas. The road is paved and suitable for all cars. Bring a plastic bag to place your boots in after the hike. An America the Beautiful Pass or a $5 fee is required to park at the trailhead.

Important: You and yourself alone are responsible for your own safety. Please know your abilities before signing up.
