Mount Townsend / Welch Peaks (Hard)

Details
Come join me for a trip up to Mt. Townsend
Distance: 8-10 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,000-3500 ft.
Difficulty: Hard
It looks like Sunday will have nice weather so let’s do a classic Olympics hike up to Mount Townsend. Comparable to something like Mt. Si, this trail is steep enough for some good exercise without being tricky or overly exhausting. After a few miles walking through wonderful forests, you’ll be delighted by gorgeous views of mountains and ocean from up on the ridge.
However, adventurous hikers may not be satisfied. Those who crave something just a little spicier have the option of visiting the nearby Welch Peaks. For an extra 1.5 miles 600 ft, and some easy class 2-3 scrambling, you can bag a second peak and a second set of beautiful views. While the terrain isn’t difficult, it takes place along a narrow ridge and is not for the faint of heart.
Hiking poles are recommended for everyone. Bring plenty of food and 2-3 L of water. It will be sunny, so don’t forget the sunscreen.

We will be taking the 7:10 ferry from Edmunds, so make sure you arrive at the Park and Ride early (6:15). We will leave promptly at 6:30 and will not wait around for stragglers.
Riders should reimburse the driver for gas and the ferry, probably $35-40 total. Bring a plastic bag to place your boots in after the hike. A Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required to park at the trailhead.
Important: You and yourself alone are responsible for your own safety. Please know your abilities before signing up.
