Hey folks,

I am planning to do a bit longer hiking or overnight tramping in the New Year public holiday near Wellington. Mt Holdsworth - Jumbo Circuit probably is a good option (I have done many times before :).

It's probably 2 days trip including driving ($20 cash to the driver), and we will try to have a day hike on it.

This trip is highly depended on the weather. The scheduled dates might be changed in any two of the 4 New Year public holidays - hunting the best weather in Tararua Range.

Please see the Mt Holdsworth - Jumbo Circuit details in below or via DOC website.

The Jumbo-Holdsworth Circuit (around 24km) is a challenging but achievable day trip from Wellington for fit trampers/runners, offering varied scenery from river valleys to alpine ridges, taking typically 8-10 hours, but requires good fitness, early start, and awareness of volatile Tararua weather, with anti-clockwise being a popular direction.
Key Details for a Day Trip:

  • Route: Jumbo-Holdsworth Circuit (24km loop).
  • Difficulty: Hard (long, steep climbs, alpine ridge).
  • Time: 8-10 hours for fit individuals; often split over two days.
  • Direction: Anti-clockwise (Holdsworth -> Powell Hut -> Jumbo Hut -> Gentle Annie) is popular and often faster.

Route Highlights:

  • Start (Holdsworth Carpark): Gentle walk along Atiwhakatu Stream via Gentle Annie Track.
  • Mountain House Shelter: Pleasant rest spot before steep climb.
  • Powell Hut: Great views before the main ridge.
  • Mount Holdsworth Summit (1470m): Highest point, spectacular views (if clear).
  • Jumbo Hut: Another key landmark on the tops.
  • Descent: Long, runnable descent via the Jumbo Track back towards the start.

Tips for a Day Trip:

  • Start Early: Aim for a 7-8 am start from Holdsworth.
  • Check Weather: Crucial in the Tararuas; conditions change rapidly (wind, cloud, rain).
  • Be Prepared: Carry layers, food, water, map; it's a big day out.
  • Fitness: Be prepared for significant ascent and descent; it's tough on the legs.
  • Popularity: It's a classic route, so expect to see others, but not overly crowded.
