West Michigan Free Writer’s Circle

This is a community-focused creative writing group for folks who want a place to meet like-minded writers, without the pressure of having to bring a pre-written piece or needing to workshop anybody else’s writing. All writers and experience levels welcome.

At every group, our format is as follows:

• writers will introduce themselves briefly
• the host will provide a prompt word for writers to use
• writers will have a 30-minute free writing session to write whatever comes to their brains—try not to self-censor or self-edit, just let it flow!
• the host will give a 3 minute warning before the writing session comes to a close
• any writer who wishes to share out loud all or a portion of what they write, will be welcome to do so. nobody is ever required to share—if you don’t want to share, simply say “pass” to move the next writer.
• there is NO commentary on anyone’s writing during the readings, and this is NOT a workshop group. if you wish to complement someone on what they wrote, please share this with them during the socializing hour afterwards. negative critique is not welcome here.
• once we’re all done, we’ll head out for coffee and socializing at a nearby small business.

This group is welcoming to all writers of all ages, genders, backgrounds and experience levels. Whether you’ve been writing for 20 years or are looking to start, this group is for you.
We’ve got a zero tolerance policy for abusive, discriminatory, sexist, racist, or hateful language or behavior toward others. Writers who engage in this type of behavior toward others will be asked to leave the group and won’t be able to return. If you write something that could be interpreted as such, we simply ask that you do not read out loud to the group.
