The **Exposition Universelle of Paris,** better known in English as the **1900 Paris Exposition**, was a [world's fair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_fair "World's fair") held in [Paris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris "Paris"), France, from 14 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. It was the [sixth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_expositions "List of world expositions") of ten major expositions held in the city between 1855 and 1937.[\[a\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposition_Universelle_(1900)#cite_note-fn1-1) It was held at the esplanade of [Les Invalides](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Invalides "Les Invalides"), the [Champ de Mars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champ_de_Mars "Champ de Mars"), the [Trocadéro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trocad%C3%A9ro,_Paris "Trocadéro, Paris") and at the banks of the [Seine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seine "Seine") between them, with an additional section in the [Bois de Vincennes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bois_de_Vincennes "Bois de Vincennes"), and it was visited by more than fifty million people. Many international congresses and other events were held within the framework of the exposition, including the [1900 Summer Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900_Summer_Olympics "1900 Summer Olympics").

Many technological innovations were displayed at the Fair, including the *[Grande Roue de Paris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grande_Roue_de_Paris "Grande Roue de Paris")* [ferris wheel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferris_wheel "Ferris wheel"), the *[Rue de l'Avenir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rue_de_l%27Avenir "Rue de l'Avenir")* [moving sidewalk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_walkway "Moving walkway"), the first ever regular passenger [trolleybus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolleybus "Trolleybus") line, [escalators](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalator "Escalator"), [diesel engines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine "Diesel engine"), [electric cars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_car "Electric car"), [dry cell batteries](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc%E2%80%93carbon_battery "Zinc–carbon battery"), [electric fire engines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_fire_engine "Electric fire engine"), [talking films](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_film "Sound film"), the [telegraphone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegraphone "Telegraphone") (the first magnetic audio recorder), the [galalith](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galalith "Galalith") and the [matryoshka dolls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matryoshka_doll "Matryoshka doll"). It also brought international attention to the [Art Nouveau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Nouveau "Art Nouveau") style. Additionally, it showcased France as a major [colonial](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism "Colonialism") power through numerous pavilions built on the hill of the Trocadéro Palace.

Major structures built for the exposition include the [Grand Palais](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Palais "Grand Palais"), the [Petit Palais](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petit_Palais "Petit Palais"), the [Pont Alexandre III](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_Alexandre_III "Pont Alexandre III"), the [Gare d'Orsay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gare_d%27Orsay "Gare d'Orsay") railroad station, and the [Paris Métro Line 1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_M%C3%A9tro_Line_1 "Paris Métro Line 1") (including its [entrances designed by Hector Guimard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_M%C3%A9tro_entrances_by_Hector_Guimard "Paris Métro entrances by Hector Guimard")), all of which survive today.
