North and South - Elizabeth Gaskell

One of the major Victorian novelists, Gaskell has possibly been surpassed for modern readers by Austen and the Brontes.
I’ve always felt that may have been because the topics of industrialisation and social class were considered less suitable, and more the domain of Dickens, Hardy and Trollope.
