Whistling Through The Graveyard - FREE Gravel Ride
Details
This is a fun 40m circular gravel ride starting from Hampton Court Station at 10am. The ride takes us along the Thames Path and the Basingstoke Canal to Brookwood Cemetery. Brookwood Cemetery, also known as the London Necropolis, is the largest cemetery in the United Kingdom and, at 350 acres, that would fit 36,000 London buses or 250K corpses - 500K if you used the top deck! It's a fascinating place to visit and well worth the pedal. After Brookwood we head towards the ruins of Newark Abbey, one of the places that 'Henry VIII knocked about a bit' - an evocative, picturesque scene on the banks of the River Wey. We then head up the Wey Navigation passing John Donne's house, an Elizabethan summer house where he hid after a secret wedding to Ann More and which ultimately led to his imprisonment. We finalise the ride by heading to Walton-on-Thames and then along the Thames Path back to Hampton Court Station at around 4.30.
I have checked the weather forecast and we might be in luck for Saturday 17 as it's supposed to be sunny intervals and 9C. If this changes for the worst we'll take a view on the ride going ahead on Friday. The ride is Free so you won't lose money signing up today, but only sign up if you are serious about coming along.
