"The truest expression of a people is in its dances and in its music"
From traditional ethnic music to foreign language pop music, the phrase "World Music" covers a lot of ground. From Reggae to Ragas, Celtic to Klezmer, Salsa to Paris Cafe, world music pretty much encompasses everything that doesn't fit comfortably into an typical 'Top 40' pop chart.
All in all, world music is considered just plain music to the vast majority of people in the world. Music is universal, and to discover the music of a culture is to discover the culture as a whole.

See all- Kham Duo - featuring Bethlehem-based Faris Ishaq - a fundraising concertSt Mary's Church, London
Kham, meaning "Raw" in Arabic, is the latest project of Bethlehem-based Nay maestro Faris Ishaq who wowed London Jazz Festival, Southwark Cathedral and Tuned In London audiences with his unique playing of this ancient Middle Eastern flute and simultaneous leg-percussion late last year. Inspired by the raw material of the Nay, made from sugarcane, Faris’ artistic journey honours its Palestinian roots and stretches like none other the potential of this minimalist instrument: you'll be looking for the loop pedal and not finding one! For this performance Faris is joined by Australian jazz harpist and vocalist Tara Minton, creating an intricate dialogue, taking their audience on an immersive sonic journey. Timeless sounds and modern artistry combine, as Faris and Tara elegantly navigate diverse musical landscapes.
The concert invites donations for IDEALS Charity who have been sending doctors to Gaza, at this concert, and invite you all to give generously. Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon Ms Sarah Phillips of King's Hospital will say a few words about what they do.
Tara Minton is an innovative harpist and vocalist known for her improvisational skills and distinctive sound. She has performed with renowned artists such as Björk, Stan Sulzmann, and the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, and has released two albums.
Faris Ishaq has three albums to his name and has performed at prestigious festivals and venues, including Kings Place and the Monterey, Panama, Southwark Cathedral and London Jazz Festivals. Given the sounds he produces, the absence of loop pedals in his performances causes jaws to drop and ears to exult.
The two first met in 2021 during a spontaneous musical improvisation, which sparked a unique creative connection. After several collaborations, Faris invited Tara to join his Kham Project, where Tara’s presence complements the exploration of raw acoustic sounds.
"When the Nay Flute moves towards the authentic self, The soul gradually moves towards the unknown. There is such brilliance in this esteemed work" Le Trio Joubran
Tickets are available on the Tuned In London website. If you don't buy online, please bring cash on the door. Please also remember to bring a donation for the charity and remember you might want to come away with an album! Faris sold a record number of CDs at his December gig for Tuned In London.
Please say if you are from this group on arrival so that I can help us find each other.
Faris is due to be live in session on Max Reinhardt's Late Late Lunch show on Soho Radio on 22nd May.
Doors open at 7pm. There will be a cash bar. The church is a 3 minute walk from Rotherhithe Station on the Windrush Overground line and a ten minute walk from Bermondsey Station.
- Double Bill: Finnish Ensemble Gamut! Album Launch & Early Music ensemble RuneSt Mary's Church, London
“Ethno Album of the Year” is the nomination attained for their most recent album by Ensemble Gamut!, whose “refreshing, soothing, intriguing and enlightening” music has attracted international interest across genres. This exceptional harp, jouhikko, blockflute (recorder) and voice trio from Finland, who combine and daringly rearrange elements from medieval music and Finnish folk songs, intertwining improvisation and electronic soundscapes, will be playing the London launch of their third album “MI”, an exploration of the boundary between the living and the non-living, asking what is alive and what has already faded into extinction. The endangered flowers of the Arctic are a central focus, with this a rallying cry to protect them: there is still time. Ensemble Gamut! are Aino Peltomaa, Ilkka Heinonen and Juho Myllylä.

From wild flowers to walled gardens: mystical spell-songs, ‘rūn’ in Old English, are the inspiration for the recently formed London-based Rune, whose fascination with the rare and touching beauty of music dating back 700 years runs deep. Resting beneath our modern idea of the medieval resides a host of musical practices – improvised, composed, often both, that challenge, engage and move us. Rune will be Angela Hicks (soprano, harp), May Robertson (vielle), Daniel Scott (recorders) and Daniel Thomson (tenor).
This special double bill concert draws together two different ensembles whose common love of harp, recorder, ancient strings and vocals are sure to impress. A unique performance in a beautiful church in a part of London where history is not lacking.
There will be a cash bar. The church is a 4 minute walk from Rotherhithe Station, close to the Mayflower Pub.
Get your tickets from the Tuned In London website. If buying on the door you will need to bring cash.
Please say you are from this group when you arrive so we can try to introduce you to other members.
